Do yourself a favor and listen to the annual Halloween mix from RL Grime

My truth: I don't like Halloween. I certainly like it, and I love every excuse to party or eat sweets, but there is something about the ritual that touches me – something about pretending to be someone or something else while it's so hard to just to be yourself. Or maybe it's Halloween that changes: eventually you stop eating your neighbors' sweets and start spending it yourself. Or the fact that, at least in New York City, it is one of the messier weekends of the year. I think maybe I'm just a curmudgeon. But I enjoy things! I promise. Actually, now that I think about it, here's one.

For most of a decade, one of my favorite Internet Halloween traditions has been waiting for stair manufacturer Henry Steinway – better known as semiprofessional Fortnite playerL Grime – to drop his annual mix. He has posted them for the last eight years, and every year they get more face-melting well. Do yourself a favor and throw it on this year's edition: between the huge beats and the creepy remixes (the rework of Megan Thee Stallion & "39" Cash Shit "is a particular favorite) you hear from Guy" Sweaty Meats & Filthy Beats "Fieri and R.L. Stine. (In recent years edition had Shaq.) If that doesn't sell you, I don't know what it will do.

Something about these mixes rearranges my brain every year. Listening to this year feels like attending that one underground rave The Matrix. Although if you look at it from the end of 2019, it might be more where the blood enters Sheet.

I mean, nowadays, who doesn't feel trapped in a club, shouting helplessly while the vampires are jumping around under the blood nozzles? I can't help but think of my colleagues in the industry Deadspin, a good website that was itself destroyed by more than a few of those blood shoots. But at least it's Halloween; at least tonight the ghosts are playing dressed up. Tomorrow is another story.
