Do We Even Know Why the SAS is Involved in the Ukrainian Conflict? – Peter Hitchens Explores.

Date:

Peter Hitchens: Why is the SAS being used in Ukraine – and do we have evidence as to why we are involved in this war?

Who decided to send the SAS to Ukraine? What are they doing there? What would happen if they were killed by Russian forces, or their families? And what was a British reconnaissance plane, capable of carrying 30 passengers, over the Black Sea last September, when a failed Russian pilot nearly shot it down, failing only because its missile was useless? What would have happened if the missile had succeeded and many British soldiers and women had died?

No one will answer these questions when I ask them. Once, we had a proper Parliament in which such brave and indomitable MPs as the late Tam Dalyell pursued such matters. Perhaps, even now, a brave man or woman is preparing to step into Tam Dalyell’s shoes. I hope so.

We can be absolutely certain that the leaked documents revealing these facts are accurate, given the fierce reaction of the US authorities to their publication. By the way, you can be sure that the Kremlin will be aware of all this for several months. The cloud of secrecy over such matters is there (as it often is) to keep the British and American peoples in the dark, not to keep hostile powers in the dark.

Meanwhile, as far as I know, this country is not at war with Russia. If we, as a member of NATO, enter into such a war, we will immediately expand the current conflict to the whole of Europe. Can you begin to imagine what that might involve? How will the people of this country profit from such events? Does anyone think about what we do?

First of all, what is the UK’s interest in continuing and perpetuating this war? A powerful faction in Washington, D.C., with supporters in the West Wing of the White House, the Pentagon, the State Department and the CIA, has long wanted a proxy war with Russia. They passionately believe that Russia must never be allowed to rise again. This faction, whose founding document is known as the Wolfowitz Doctrine, has been hard at work since 1992, when the New York Times leaked their plans. They are roughly the same people who created the Iraq war out of nothing, who got the West into a quagmire in Afghanistan, who supported Islamic fanatics in Syria—the kind of people they would have caught in Chicago.

They have an unparalleled record of fanatical stupidity, and everywhere they step they end up in corpse-strewn ruins, with whoever they can get out fleeing the fire shouting… towards Europe and the Channel Coast.

If every dollar these war fanatics spent had instead been spent on building free, prosperous nations in places like Russia, the world would be an amazingly better place. This is, in essence, America’s problem. If no one in the United States will stand up to them, they will face their repeated stupid wars and the rest of us will have to watch and weep and greet the fleeing multitudes.

But we don’t have to get involved. Why are we in this? How does Britain benefit from the war between Russia and Ukraine? How, for that matter, did impoverished Ukraine benefit from it, whose cities are in ruins, whose economy is half dead, and countless numbers of its youth gone to graves? Why should there be British soldiers at all? If Parliament does not discuss this, we are not a democracy. And if any critical voices are drowned out by slander and abuse, we are not a free country.
