A teenager became drunk to death after drinking Vodka Cruisers, Jim Beams double strength and other alcoholic drinks on Christmas Day, a court heard.

The 16-year-old died from acute alcohol poisoning after drinking a Cruisers esky among other drinks in Echuca, Victoria, on Christmas Day 2022.

About a dozen people were at the gathering and the boy, known to the court as LG, was heard by his cousins telling others that he had been “tactically vomiting” during the day to keep drinking, the court was told.

Coroner’s findings into the death were released at the Victorian Coroner’s Court on Wednesday after a lengthy inquest.

The boy’s relatives said they saw him “shooting,” “snorkeling” and “spinning drinks” throughout the day on December 25.

Each of these drinking methods allows the person consuming the drinks to become intoxicated faster than normal.

The boy arrived at the Christmas lunch with his own esky containing 10 Cruisers and a “handful” of UDL cans, but was also seen taking drinks from others.

Heartbreakingly, he fell to his knees at 11pm, but despite his blatant intoxication, no one at the party believed his condition was truly serious.

LG’s sister tried to convince him to drink water before sleeping, but at 8:30 am the next day his uncle noticed gray vomit coming out of his mouth and called triple-0.

The child was quickly taken to The Royal Children’s Hospital, but he was unable to recover from his condition and doctors confirmed he was brain dead two days later on 28 December.

Coroner Catherine Fitzgerald said the event lacked sufficient adult supervision and declared the boy’s death preventable.

She told the court that LG had “clearly” drank beyond his means and that someone should have intervened to stop him, the Herald of the sun reported.

“Allowing a minor to consume this amount of alcohol poses significant risks to their health and well-being and should not have happened,” he said.

‘There was totally inadequate supervision of LG’s alcohol consumption and level of intoxication by both his parents and adult family members.

“This allowed LG to consume a dangerous amount of alcohol throughout the day and night.”

The coroner reminded attendees that the consumption of alcohol by minors under 18 years of age is illegal and this fact should have been considered on the day.

He noted that there was no “adequate” attempt to stop the minor from drinking, even as his intoxication increased throughout the day.

LG’s parents previously told the court that they allowed their son to drink on “special occasions” after he turned 16, but that his maximum drinking limit was supposed to be four a day maximum.

They provided LG with the 10-pack of Cruisers and asked him not to take them all to the Christmas lunch, which they later admitted he ignored.
