Disturbing video shows a 16-year-old Aboriginal girl being brutally beaten by 10 women in what has been described as a case of “cultural revenge”.

Indigenous senator Jacinta Nampijinpa Price criticized the “romanticism” of traditional Aboriginal culture after footage emerged of the attack which occurred in Alice Springs around 3am on Saturday.

The young woman was brutally beaten and trampled by her attackers moments after they were involved in another fight.

She was taken to hospital and treated for serious chest injuries.

Senator Nampijinpa Price told Daily Mail Australia she had since been informed “this was a case of traditional cultural revenge”.

“I am very concerned about this issue and these images, this is incredible and horrific behavior that is becoming the norm in places like Alice Springs,” she said.

Senator Nampijinpa Price said this type of violent crime and “vigilantism” would not be tolerated in Australia’s largest cities.

“But because it’s out of sight and out of mind, people are happy to let it go,” he said.

“It sickens me that people idealize traditional culture to the point that we are now too cowardly to intervene when this is what is happening in towns like Alice Springs.”

He described it as “toxic tolerance” and said it “has to stop.”

“When behavior like this occurs, it’s time to intervene and put a stop to it,” he said.

The liberal country senator from Alice Springs also spoke out about the attack in the Senate on Monday afternoon, after seeing the violent footage herself.

‘These women, I could hear in the video, are Warlpiri women. I am a Warlpiri woman. “I’m totally concerned to see this kind of behavior,” she said on the Senate floor.

“I want this chamber and the Australian public to know that traditional cultural revenge, also known as vigilantism, has no place in our society in 2024.”

Senator Nampijinpa Price referenced the recent crime wave in the Northern Territory and said as a society we are “ignoring the fact that traditional culture plays a part in this, because we are all too scared”.

“This romanticism must end if we want to support the most marginalized in our communities,” he said.

The teenager at the center of the incident drove to Alice Springs hospital and then to her home in the Yuendumu community.

Police later found her and took her back to the hospital for further tests and treatment.

Alice Springs Criminal Investigation Division is urging witnesses to come forward as they continue to investigate the incident.

Senior Sergeant Michael Curtiss said: “The violence we saw over the weekend was completely unacceptable.

“CCTV cameras show 30 witnesses who have not yet come forward and given statements to the police.”

Mrs Nampijinpa Price is now calling on Warlpiri elders to condemn violent actions and traditional cultural revenge more broadly.

‘(That’s a) 16-year-old girl. Imagine if you were the daughters of people on the streets of Sydney. They tore the clothes off her body and trampled on her.

‘We should not treat indigenous Australians any differently to others. We shouldn’t lower standards and we shouldn’t accept this kind of behaviour.’

‘Enough is enough.’
