A man accused of stabbing a university student to death in a car park is a former student at one of Queensland’s top private schools – as police claim the incident was a botched drug deal.

Will Swinbourne, 21, was allegedly pulled from his car and stabbed in the chest by former Ipswich Grammar School pupil Haedyn Rawson, 23, in a confrontation in the car park below the Gold Coast Radiology building in Hope Island.

Despite the efforts of paramedics to revive him, Mr. Swinbourne of serious stab wounds at the scene at around 2.20pm.

Police allege Swinbourne, who studied accountancy, met Rawson at British DJ Fred Again’s Gold Coast gig on Saturday night.

“We believe they met briefly at the weekend before the incident took place and that’s the only time they know each other – there’s no other relationship there at all,” Detective Inspector Mark Mooney of the Gold Coast Criminal Investigation Branch said.

Police allege Mr Swinbourne drove to a car park in Hope Island for a drug deal with Rawson on Monday after the concert before he was fatally stabbed.

‘(The stabbing) happened very quickly, I understand the victim had only just arrived.’

Rawson was arrested three hours later after allegedly fleeing on foot through a golf course at the nearby Sanctuary Cove estate.

The fenced area was cordoned off during a widespread police manhunt through streets, golf course fairways and waterways.

A 23-year-old Surfers Paradise man who had been drinking with Rawson at a tavern next to the center was arrested at 4.45pm but was later released without charge.

Det Insp Mooney said a carving knife was seized by Queensland Police as part of the investigation into the alleged stabbing.

“This is very worrying behaviour. Anyone who takes a knife anywhere is asking for trouble,’ he said.

‘We ask people to leave their knives at home, they don’t need them. Society is not so dangerous that you need a knife to protect yourself.

‘You take a knife to an incident like this and these are the possible consequences of that.’

He also reflected on the widespread consequences of the alleged violence.

‘It is devastating for the families involved. You have two families of young men whose lives are now ruined – one no longer with us and one who will possibly spend a very long time in prison,’ he said.

Det Insp Mooney said bikie links to the crime have been “categorically” ruled out.

Rawson, who now has a large tattoo on his neck, appeared briefly at Southport Magistrates Court on Tuesday and his case was adjourned until March 26.
