The woman who allegedly caused a Jetstar flight to Bali to return was said to have acted “erratically” before boarding and allegedly abused an elderly man while she was on the plane.

Jetstar flight JQ43 from Melbourne to Bali took off as scheduled at 10am on Monday.

Just two hours into a six-hour journey, the flight crew made the decision to abandon the planned route and return to Melbourne at 3pm after a passenger became unruly.

Kyle Hand, another passenger, said the chaotic scenes began after the woman spent 30 minutes in the bathroom.

Hand said the woman was pacing up and down the aisle of the plane before hurling expletives at a man he believed to be about 75 years old.

“She started being abusive and threatening to assault, I would say the guy would have been around 75, and that’s when it really started,” Mr Hand told Sunrise on Tuesday.

Another passenger claimed the woman went on a tirade mid-flight and even knocked on the cockpit door because she thought someone had stolen her phone.

The unruly passenger began shouting at other travelers before she was eventually restrained.

“I’m not sure what happened, but she continued to abuse a few other people in the back – they ended up detaining her,” Mr Hand said.

Mr Hand added that another passenger told him the woman was acting “erratically” before she even boarded the flight.

“The passengers next to me mentioned that they saw her acting quite erratically right before she got on the plane,” Hand said.
