The nominations for the 72nd Primetime Emmy Awards have arrived, and once again streaming services dominated the nominees. Netflix led the pack with 160 nominations, with Amazon and Hulu also making waves. But there are also some big new names on the list this year, with Apple TV Plus, Disney Plus and even Quibi getting their first nominations for the coveted TV awards.
Apple TV Plus won a total of 18 nominations in various categories, including two major nominations for prestigious series The Morning Show: Steve Carell was nominated for Best Actor in a Drama Series and Jennifer Aniston was nominated for Best Actress in a Drama Series. Billy Crudup and Mark Duplass were also nominated for Best Supporting Actor in a Drama Series for their roles in the series.
The Emmy nominations are the second major opportunity for awards for Apple’s flagship series after The Morning Show also received three Golden Globes nominations for Best Drama earlier this year and a few Best Actress nominations for Jennifer Aniston and Reese Witherspoon (although the show closed completely during the event).
Apple has made no secret of its goal of creating award-winning television with its streaming service, which is looking for a breakthrough hit months after its debut last fall. And a big win at the Emmys this year can help give the service that kind of success.
More unexpected The Mandalorian – the Disney Plus breakthrough hit – which also received an Emmy nomination for the best drama series, the first for the young streaming service. That is quite unlikely The Mandalorian will take the prize home – it’s against Better Call Saul, The Crown, The Handmaid’s Tale, Killing Eve, Ozark, Stranger Things, and Succession in that category – but it’s still a big win for Disney (which reportedly wasn’t even set up a serious campaign before the show). The Mandalorian was also responsible for the majority of the 18 other Disney Plus nominations in the various categories, including Taika Waititi (who wants to follow up on his recent Oscar win) for his voiceover as IG-11 and Giancarlo Esposito for his guest appearance as Moff Gideon .
Finally there is Quibi. The focus on short content seems almost guaranteed to pay off with an Emmy win. The young streaming platform received 10 nominations this year, all in shortform-specific categories: eight nominations for the Best Actor and Best Actress in a Short Form Comedy or Drama Series categories and two for Best Short Form Series (for Reno 911! and Most dangerous game).
The 72nd Primetime Emmy Awards are currently taking place on September 20, hosted by Jimmy Kimmel. It is not clear whether this year’s event will include a personal ceremony due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.
