Pixar’s chief creative officer admitted this week that the producers of Lightyear 2022 “have asked a lot from the audience.”
We did a lot of soul-searching about this because we all love the movie. We love the characters and the premise. I think what we ended up with in terms of what went wrong is we asked too much of the audience,” said Peter Docter of Pixar. detour.
The film has Toy Story fans outraged after it was revealed that Tim Allen was replaced by Chris Evans as the voice of Buzz Lightyear in the adult story. More outrage over the inclusion of a lesbian kiss ensued.
The film earned a disappointing $226.4 million in receipts against a $200 million budget – but it almost certainly lost money when marketing costs are factored in.
“When they hear Buzz, they’re like, ‘Wow, where are Mr. Potato Head and Woody and Rex?'” Then we put them in this sci-fi movie and they’re like, “What?” Docter added. He seems to agree with some fans that he’s strayed too far from the Toy Story movies that people know and love.
Peter Docter, shown here, believes that Lightyear’s producers “demanded too much from the audience.”
By comparison, Toy Story 4, which featured Allen, grossed over $1 billion at the box office for the same budget. A fifth movie is in the works – and Allen will reprise his role as Buzz.
His exclusion from Lightyear sparked allegations that he was turned away for being vocally conservative, but Disney insisted it was appropriate to use a different voice actor for a film with a significantly different tone.
Lightyear was the first Disney movie to run uninterrupted in cinemas since the Covid-19 pandemic began.
Crucially, the film received the lowest rating Rotten tomatoes Since 2017 Cars 3 increased by 74 percent.
Even if they read the stuff in the press, it was so far off, both in concept, and I think in the way the characters were drawn, that they were portrayed. It was more than science fiction, Docter said this week.
And (director) Angus[McLean]took it very seriously and really wanted to cast those characters as real characters. But the characters in “Toy Story” are much broader, and so I think there was a disconnect between what people wanted/expected and what we were giving them.
Docter, who has been at Pixar since 1990, said, “Look, it’s great to go back and explore these worlds and these characters, but you want to have a reason, kind of a compelling reason, that you’re making the movie.”
Despite it being an obvious flop, Disney announced earlier this month that the original Toy Story cast, including Tim Allen and Tom Hanks, will be returning for Toy Story 5.
‘See you soon, Woody, you’re a sad, weird little man with pathos. And off we go to No. 5! To infinity and beyond!’ Allen tweeted earlier this month.
Toy Story is a long-running Disney movie franchise. The original film, which was the first computer-animated feature film and the first feature release from Pixar Animation Studios, came out in 1995.
It won an Academy Award for Special Achievement in 1996, as there was no Best Animated Feature category at the time. The first three films received near-universal acclaim, though the fourth did not fare well with fans and critics.
This has led some to accuse Disney of trying to flog a dead horse in the latest sequel.

Lightyear’s gay kiss has seen it pulled from cinemas and Disney+ services around the world, particularly in the Muslim world. Actress Uzo Aduba briefly kisses her life partner in one scene.
Disney and others championed the scene to give viewers insight into the different types of families that exist.
Thirteen countries of the Islamic world and the Palestinian territories prevented this.
Speaking about the controversy, Chris Evans said: “Yeah, it’s frustrating. It’s nice to be a part of something that’s making social progress, but with this streak of bittersweet frustration, at the same time, there are still places to catch up.”
The film was released amid a battle between Disney and Florida Governor Ron DeSantis when then-CEO Bob Chapek spoke out against the Sunshine State’s No Less Gay Bill.
Shabek was ousted in late 2022 and replaced by former CEO Bob Iger. The returning president sought to repair Disney’s relationship with state legislators.
DeSantis in late March 2022 signed into law the bill, which would ban instruction regarding sexual orientation and gender identity in kindergarten through third grade.
The moment had been deleted earlier in the film but was restored after Pixar employees protested Disney’s response to the Florida bill.

Not holding back: Tim Allen has slammed Toy Story spin-off Lightyear after conservative star replacement
For his part, Allen was not very impressed with the film, describing it as lacking in continuity with respect to the original franchise.
“It’s a great story, it doesn’t seem to have anything to do with the game,” Allen said in an interview. additional. “It has nothing to do with Buzz.”
We’ve been talking about this for many years…but the brassy one who made the first four movies isn’t. It’s a whole new team up that has nothing to do with the first movies.
“I stayed out of this.”
Allen went on to say that he did not originally think the film would be as animated as the previous Toy Story films and that it was in fact live-action.
He said, “There’s really no Toy Story Buzz without Woody.” I’m not sure about the idea – I’m a conspiracy guy. It seems like a big adventure story, and as I can see, it’s not a big adventure story.
