Date:

An outraged mother calls out the bullies who traumatized her disabled son by using his wheelchair while taunting him to face the consequences.

Louisiana’s Kimberly Mitchell sent a letter addressing a recent “senior prank” at Abbeville High School in which students mocked her son Tay’Shawn Landry, who has cerebral palsy and requires a motorized wheelchair.

In the videos, a group in the school is seen wreaking havoc by covering a hallway with toilet paper, stacking desks and chairs on top of each other, and moving around in wheelchairs.

A video shared by the mother shows a student in Landry’s chair appearing to blur his speech and make squealing noises while another person records laughter.

In a Facebook post, Mitchell said the band “played the wrong kid and wrong mom” and “there will be consequences.”

‘Sir. Pranks are fun and all, but when you make fun of my disabled child and his stuff, IT BECOMES MY PROBLEM,’ the angry mum wrote.

In an interview with KLFYLandry said the videos broke his heart and made him not want to go back to school.

‘I was angry. I was mad. I was crying. I tried to stop myself from crying because I wanted to go to school. [I] could not. I was just upset,” he said.

Landry’s wheelchair was in a classroom when the students entered the school, a Vermilion Parish school system official said.

“On Friday, videos became available via social media indicating that students gained access to a locked room that housed an electric wheelchair loaned to an AHS student who uses it during the school day,” wrote the Superintendent Tommy Byler.

“Several students were seen crossing the halls in wheelchairs and displayed insensitive and disrespectful actions towards students with disabilities,” he continued.

The superintendent wrote that he and the other members of the school board were “completely disappointed” and “in no way condone” the behavior.

Byler’s statement comes days after the heartbroken and angry mother called out the bullies who took the opportunity to mock him when he was not around.

‘AAs a mother, it hurt to see my son upset and not wanting to go back to school because he took it as people making fun of him for being different,” he said. she writes.

“Put yourself in his shoes and tell me how you would feel?” Mitchell said. ‘Yes, I know you joke and clown around with him every day. The difference is these things that he is in the presence of discussions, last night he was not.

Even more heartbreaking, Landry said he was shocked and saddened by the videos and the participation of his classmates.

“Some people I go to school with want to turn their backs on me and do this; it’s not acceptable,” Landry said.

In a statement, Byler said the students who participated in the videos apologized to Landry.

He also said conversations with the teenager and the others took place.

Conversations may not be enough for Landry’s family and friends who saw the hurt the incident caused him, in addition to the pain and suffering he grew up with.

“His wandering is horrible,” said Marilyn Mitchell, his grandmother.

“He never resisted. He had never walked in his life. He crawled, then after the month of the operation, he tried to walk. Now he has scoliosis, which makes it even harder for him to move around,” she continued.

‘Let them see what it’s like to be on this floor on this cement that comes and goes. Just how they rolled and closed anything. See this pain. See the agony. See the frustration of people with disabilities,” the grandmother said.

Her other grandmother expressed concern about her mental state following the horrific act of bullying.

“With everything going on in the world today with children, we don’t know how it’s going to affect it in the long run,” Clarice Landry said.

The grandmothers also shared their frustration that the consequences for the pupils involved either did not happen or were not made public.

“Where are the consequences for these children? His mother has heard nothing of the consequences they will bring to these children,” Clarice said.

“Why did they allow this? We are taxpayers, so the school system allows children to go to school to do this and make fun of children with disabilities,” she continued.

“They say they are good children. I’m not saying they’re not good kids, but if you’re a good kid, why did you do this to Tay’Shawn? Why did you laugh at him like that? the concerned grandmother told the outlet.

In his lengthy statement, Byler said the matter was still under investigation.

The superintendent wrote that the “necessary disciplinary action” could come from the results of the school’s investigation.

He added that all disciplinary actions against students or staff are confidential.

“The Vermilion Parish School System does not tolerate any disrespect for students with disabilities or any behavior that includes damage to school property in any way,” its statement concluded.
