A disabled toddler and her golden retriever are the cutest best friends.

Mother of one, Cassidy Croot, 27, of Temecula, California, added two-year-old golden retriever Indie as a new addition to the family because of Brynn’s love of dogs.

After arriving at his new home, the dog immediately bonded with his disabled human sister, four-year-old Brynn who has leukodystrophy.

The couple has since documented their adorable relationship through a series of photos and videos that they share online.

Since coming home, Indie has made a huge impact on the family, helping Brynn with daily activities and being a companion to Cassidy and playmate to Sheltie mix, Peanut, five, and mixed race, Piper, six.

Cassidy said, “Brynn’s favorite dog breed has always been Golden Retrievers.

“If she’s upset or has undergone medical procedures, we put golden retriever puppy videos on YouTube for her to watch.

“Since Indie came into her life, he has never left her side. Every time she gets a feeding tube, he’s next to her.

“Every morning he cuddles with her in bed. They both love bubbles and he will try to eat them while she clap at him and smile.

“They’re inseparable, he’s the reason she’s always smiling, even when she’s doing things she struggles with, like brushing her teeth and hair.

“Brynn had hip surgery in July so he’s having a hard time getting up, but once we get to that stage I know Indie will be next to her and support her when she gets up.”

Leukodystrophy is a group of rare genetic disorders that affect the white matter of the brain, which helps form enzymes and manage the fatty acids in the brain and nerves.

Cassidy said, “Brynn’s diagnosis was a huge shock. Since she wasn’t diagnosed until she was two, she seemed to be developing normally until that stage.

‘She has no head or trunk control and is fed through a feeding tube.

“Since Indie first came home, he’s been by her side all the time, and every time she sees him, her face lights up. He’s one of the main reasons she smiles.

“The form of leukodystrophy she has is actually so rare that she’s one of the few kids in the world to walk around with it.

“She’s very cognitively aware, but she just can’t communicate well and needs round-the-clock care.”

Cassidy took Indie into her home in September 2021, after a friend struggled to care for him in the tiny apartment they lived in.

She added: ‘Indie is such a sweet dog; he loves everyone’s pets and fits right in with our small family.

“We like to go for walks, and Brynn will just watch him play from her medical stroller and grin the whole time.”

What is Leukodystrophy?

Leukodystrophies are a group of rare, progressive, metabolic, genetic diseases that affect the brain, spinal cord, and often peripheral nerves.

Each type of leukodystrophy is caused by a specific gene abnormality that leads to abnormal development or destruction of the white matter (myelin sheath).

The myelin sheath is the protective sheath of the nerve and the nerves cannot function normally without it.

Symptoms of some types of leukodystrophy begin shortly after birth, but others develop later in childhood or even adulthood.

Leukodystrophy can cause problems with:

Movement

Vision

to belong

Balance

Possibility to eat

Memory

Behaviour

Thought

While every leukodystrophy is different, the most common problem is that a child’s health gradually deteriorates in one way or another, even though they seemed fine at first.
