Kevin Richardson, Antron McCray, Korey Wise, Raymond Santana and Yusef Salaam were all smiling when they walked the purple carpet with DuVernay on Sunday evening in Los Angeles.

The men stopped to talk to E! host Giuliana Rancic, who expressed gratitude for being able to share their stories with so many people through When They See Us, a realistic image of the 1989 jogging shop in Central Park.

& # 39; It's a blessing. It was all a dream come true, & Wise said.

& # 39; It was the most important thing for us to see each other's stories, because we hadn't even talked about this yet, & # 39; Salaam said, noting that he was not familiar with Wise's story before watching the series.

& # 39; First of all, humanizing us in such a wonderful way & # 39; n honor and for me to see Korey, who had gone to the park but was not a suspect – they were not looking for him – and then they came to fetch me like a suspect, they asked him if he would come with me.

& # 39; This is the ultimate & # 39; take a bullet for your homie & kind thing and I was just so grateful to see it because I didn't know. We never talked about how our experiences were. & # 39;

McCray said it was & # 39; overwhelming & # 39; was to be with the Emmy. & # 39; I'm trying to get it. It's great, & # 39; he said.

It has been almost 30 years since the men were convicted of raping a jogger in 1990.

They all served time behind bars, with Wise for more than 12 years, until their convictions were abandoned in 2002.

On the purple carpet, DuVernay explained how she was inspired to make When They See Us after Santana approached her on Twitter.

& # 39; I had known about the case of these brothers. I was a teenager in Compton when they were teenagers in Harlem when they went through what they were going through, so I felt connected, & she said.

The director posted a photo of her & # 39; dates & # 39; on Twitter before they arrived at the show.

After the Emmy nominations were announced in July, DuVernay described the men's response to the news.

& # 39; This ceremony and experience is very isolated for our industry & # 39 ;, she said The Hollywood Reporter. & # 39; You have people who really live their lives deeply, meaningfully, who are unrelated to our kind of raving celebrations.

& # 39; For them, their prizes came from the way their lives have changed, the way people now view them, the way history has been rewritten.

& # 39; Now that they know, they are preparing their tuxedo and going in there. & # 39;

She announced that she was planning to take the men to the Emmy last month during a For Your Consideration event.

& # 39; When I called them to tell them about the Emmy, none of them knew, & # 39; said DuVernay during an event panel.

& # 39; I had to literally explain to them what it was, for one of them I had to say, "It's just like the Grammy, but TV."

Richardson, McCray, Wise, Santana and Salaam were played by Asante Blackk, Caleel Harris, Jharrel Jerome, Marquis Rodriguez and Ethan Herisse respectively.

DuVernay was nominated for Best Director in a Limited Drama series, Jerome for Best Actor and Blackk for Best Supporting Actor.

The show has also been nominated for Best Limited Drama Series.
