A couple were left furious after they were charged a $30 ‘entertainment fee’ by the restaurant’s band.
The diners, from Georgia, US, admitted they had no idea an entertainment fee would be charged until the bill hit the table.
On Reddit, angry diners showed off their receipt, which lists the entertainment charge below their meals and drinks.
The charge was separate from the restaurant’s standard service charge of 18 per cent and raised the bill from A$420 to A$450.
Commenters were upset for the couple, with many labeling the brazen accusation a “blatant scam.”
Couple furious after being hit with entertainment fee
‘Unless it’s advertised outside, it looks like shit. It’s also included before they add taxes, so you get taxed on that too. “The damn audacity of people to include that or tip on taxed items,” one person fumed.
‘This is one of those “leave the money on the table, tip the waiter and walk away” moments. “I’m sorry, but if I didn’t ask for it, I’m not paying for it,” another suggested.
‘I’ve been a doorman for 7 years, if we’re going to charge for the DJ or the show, we’ll charge at the door, allowing people to decide if it’s something they want before they come in. “Bill is a bastard,” said another.
Many wondered if the band or servers would actually see the service charge or cover charge.
Others were angered by other mentions on the restaurant’s bill.
“As if $7 (A$10) wasn’t already a scam,” one person wrote.
Some said the fish was too expensive.
‘Red snapper is one of the cheapest fish. Even at “market price” it won’t be as amazing a margin at a restaurant as fresh Dungeness crab or live Maine lobster.’
Some people said the surcharge is “expected.”
‘I’ve been to a blues-themed restaurant in Atlanta that has something similar. “If you get a reservation for a closer table, there is a surcharge for the live band and the waiters let you know,” said one man.
Some pointed out that the notice about the surcharge is “on the website,” defending the restaurant.
