An Australian dietitian shared the calorie-saving tips you need to know for weight loss, including swapping cheddar cheese for Parmesan cheese and adjusting your ground beef portions to make your dish healthier.

Paula Norris from Melbourne shared an image about her Instagram page, where she said these are some of the tricks she and her partner use in their kitchen when trying to “ keep things slim. ”

Paula’s tips include replacing mashed potatoes and butter with half mash and cauliflower, and swapping sour cream for natural yogurt.

1. Tweak your ground beef

The first thing the dietitian said you should do if you want to cut calories is cut in half the amount of ground beef you make for tacos, spaghetti bolognese, or chili.

Then replace the other half with black or red kidney beans.

“Not only does this save you calories, but it also adds precious fiber,” explains Paula.

You can also fill your ground beef dishes with additional vegetables like shredded carrot, mushrooms and zucchini – all of which reduce calories and add nutrients.

Swap cheddar for Parmesan cheese

The second thing Paula said you should do is swap cheddar cheese for Parmesan cheese.

This can save you calories because Parmesan cheese has a sharper flavor, so you don’t necessarily have to use that much.

Paula explained that this can save you 45 calories.

Change your mash

Mashed potatoes with butter is a delicious treat, but it can be quite high in calories.

“We use half mashed potatoes, half cauliflower as a side dish or on top of potato pie,” Paula said.

“A little milk and some salt and pepper gives you enough flavor that you can skip the butter too.”

Switch mayonnaise for a homemade dip

Paula said while she likes to eat a few tablespoons of mayonnaise with a dish at home, she knows that mayonnaise can be quite chunky – and there is a healthy, easy substitute.

This is our go-to swap for mayonnaise for salads. Other options, depending on the dish, are cottage cheese, plain Greek yogurt, avocado, hummus or tahini, ‘said Paula.

To make her dressing dip, mix two tablespoons of yogurt, a teaspoon of Dijon mustard, a teaspoon of lemon juice, and salt and pepper.

The dressing is also suitable for roasted vegetables and chicken dishes.

Mix pasta with zucchini noodles

For a less carbohydrate-rich meal than pasta with pesto, you can tweak your dish and make half zucchini noodles.

“Instead of two cups of pasta, use one cup of pasta and zoodles,” Paula said.

This will give you one of your servings of vegetables for the day and lighten your overall dish.

Swap avocado toast for avocado and peas on toast

While avocado on toast is a healthy breakfast choice, if you want to cut valuable calories on a particular day, consider putting half an avocado and half a pea puree on toast.

“Instead of using half an avocado on your toast, use a quarter and a quarter cup of peas on toast,” she said.

“While I’m not in favor of calorie counting, it’s common knowledge that the total calories you take in should be less than the total calories if you’re trying to lose weight.”
