Dieter Brummer dead: Home and Away hunk was ‘irreplaceable’ as childhood best friend returns home

Dieter Brummer made such an impression during his stint on Home and Away that it took nearly five months and more than 7,500 auditions to fill the void when he left.

Rob, the oldest friend of the 90s heartthrob, returned to his home in Glenhaven in northern Sydney on Tuesday to begin the devastating task of sorting his belongings.

Brummer was found dead on Saturday in the house he shared with his parents after police were asked to conduct a welfare check on the actor turned window cleaner.

Stepping out of the limelight, the 45-year-old ran a commercial window cleaning business that he called his Plan B career.

Rob, his best buddy of over 30, tearfully told the Daily Mail Australia that Brummer was the smartest, most intelligent person he’d ever known.

He said Brummer’s death was still too raw to talk about, but he understood why it had broken the collective hearts of a generation of Aussies who grew up with posters of the teenage Home and Away heartthrob Blu-Tacked on their walls.

‘My wife had’ [the posters] too mature,’ he said, smiling through glassy eyes at the memory.

Rob met Brummer when he was 11 – four years before he was cast in the television soap – and said from the start that he was “just the best mate.”

Danny Rizk was working at Mullinars – the casting agency that gave Brummer his big break – when it was announced that he had been written out of the show.

“They had to find a replacement,” he said. “It took Mullinar’s respected unit four and a half months and more than 7,500 auditions to fill that void.

“Of all the deaths in creative services, this one upset me… To anyone reading this, mental illness is not a hoax. It’s important on every frontier, because it really eats into your core.’

He traded it all for a career washing windows once he revealed that he preferred the solitude of the gig over waiting tables or bartending between roles.

“The good thing about it is that I don’t interact with people too much,” he said in 2009.

“If I were tapping beer, I’d have to do it with guys who say, ‘Oh, you’re drinking beer now and you used to be in Underbelly’.”

But a source told Daily Mail Australia that in recent years he has been particularly thoughtful about ‘what could have been’ if his career had taken a different trajectory.

His dream was to always go back to acting at some point.

“Sometimes you sit back and think, ‘I wonder what it would have been like if I didn’t get that job when I was 15?’

He left a huge hole in our lives and our world will never be the same. Our thoughts go out to everyone who knew him, loved him or worked with him over the years.

Instead, Rob spent about an hour indoors on Tuesday morning hauling things between his car and the garage while reflecting on Brummer’s short life.

He said of all the ways Brummer has been remembered; a hard worker, talented, a heartthrob, the most important thing should be that he was just a good man through and through.
