South Sydney’s Jason Demetriou is under intense pressure just two games into the new NRL season, and the beleaguered side won’t be helped by Sam Burgess flying in for his first coaching job.

Rabbitohs legend Burgess left the club under a dark cloud last year amid an alleged dispute over the alleged favorable treatment of star player Latrell Mitchell, with Demetriou siding with the full-back.

After missing the finals last season, a good start to the new campaign was imperative.

However, the Bunnies lost their first two matches of the year, with the team being beaten by last year’s grand finalists, the Broncos, emphatically at Suncorp Stadium.

As a result, all eyes are on Demetriou ahead of a tough run of matches heading into Matchday 10.

Sam Burgess left fans wondering if Souths got rid of the wrong manager

The Bunnies are in terrible form after losing their first two games of the season

And to rub salt in the wounds, Burgess loves life on the other side of the world.

The footballing great took his first coaching job in the off-season, with Super League side Warrington Wolves, and he is already flying the team.

They beat the London Broncos 58-4 on Sunday to move to the top of the table, ahead of defending champions Wigan – although the Warriors have a game in hand.

“London are a tough team and fortunately we have players who can find space,” Burgess said after the big win.

“We took every chance we had and we didn’t give up much. That was really the difference.

There is still a long season to go, but Burgess’ early success will surely not go unnoticed in Sydney.

Elsewhere, speculation is rife that Wayne Bennett could make a dramatic return to the Bunnies in place of Demetriou.

The pressure is on Jason Demetriou to find a solution to his team’s growing problems

According to Fox League’s Paul Kent, Bennett – whose contract with the Dolphins expires at the end of this season – could replace Demetriou if the team’s poor form continues, and bring back Burgess as an assistant.

“Sam comes back as Wayne’s assistant and goes through the same process. Wayne comes back as head coach, gives Sam two years to work under him like he does now with Woolf, like he did with Demetriou before,” Kent said.

“So that’s your entire succession plan, done.”
