Banksy may have appeared in person at one of the world's largest art exhibitions to unveil his latest work – with an image of a cruise ship sailing through the canals of the city.
The elusive British street artist posted a video on his Instagram with the title & # 39; explain my stand at the Venice Biennale & # 39 ;, which shows a mysterious figure at the art show.
Hiding his face, the figure reveals a series of oil colors that – when viewed together – show the huge ship that overshadows the city and its traditional gondolas.
Next to it is a sign: & # 39; Venice in oil. & # 39;
British street artist Banksy posted a video on Instagram of a mysterious figure who unveiled a series of oil paints at the Venice Biennale, which together represent an enormous cruise ship above the city.
The title of the play, Venice in Oil, is on a sign next to it. & # 39; Although it is the largest and most prestigious art event in the world, I have never been invited for any reason & # 39 ;, wrote the painter on social media
The figure then sits down next to the paintings to read a newspaper – face still covered – while members of the audience walk by and admire the work.
But the unauthorized installation is quickly noticed by police officers who instruct the person to remove it.
With the paintings packed in a wooden box again, the figure is then shown along a canal while a real cruise ship passes by in the background.
& # 39; Although it is the largest and most prestigious art event in the world, I have never been invited for any reason, & # 39; added Banksy.
The video has been viewed more than 2 million times since it was uploaded on Wednesday, many more views than any message from the official Biannale account.
There were rumors that Banksy was at the Biennale after a piece of graffiti with an image of a migrant with a flare on the island of Dorsoduro appeared before the opening of the exhibition
Artists from all over the world take part in pavilions to exhibit their work at the art biennial, which runs from 11 May to 24 November.
The theme of this year's event is May You Live In Interesting Times.
There were rumors that Banksy was at the Biennale after a piece of graffiti appeared along a canal with a migrant child holding a flare of light.
It appeared on Dorsoduro Island last week and coincided with the city's art exhibition, which attracts hundreds of thousands of people.
It would not be the first time that Banksy chose the plight of migrants for his work.
In 2015, he sprayed an image of Apple founder Steve Jobs – the son of a Syrian refugee – at the migrant camp in Calais.
The painting, called & # 39; The Jungle & # 39 ;, had Jobs carry an Apple computer and a black garbage bag.
