It was supposed to be a joke about fruits and vegetables, but has sent police a virtual rain of rotten tomatoes.

‘A tomato walks into a bar, but gets a red face for not wanting to identify itself as a fruit or vegetable’ is the subject of a serious cartoon used to combat discrimination.

Unfortunately, few who watched the 80-second video seem to have seen the funny side – with more than 1,400 adding a paste to it.

When he calls the police, he is reassured by a blueberry officer with a rainbow badge on his helmet that ‘reporting makes a difference’.

Former officer Harry Miller, of the Fair Cop campaign group, said, “It’s more than absurd. This is why the public is losing respect for the police.

‘The police cannot say that they do not have time to attend burglaries, but at the same time stand up for the rights of tomatoes. They serve an awakened political agenda. ‘

Police said no public money was spent on the video, made by students, and that it received positive feedback from the LGBTQ + community.
