Detroit substitute teacher who threw hockey stick at a child sentenced after student needed staples

An 11-year-old Detroit schoolgirl required stitches after being hit on the head with a metal hockey stick by a substitute teacher at school.

The incident happened in May at Hope Academy in Detroit, Michigan, according to attorney Jon Marko, and caused brain trauma to the young girl.

The substitute PE teacher, Jacqueline Brown, had become angry with another student and tried to throw the stick at another student.

‘She was screaming and cursing’ said Cha’Kyra Thomas, the student who was hit by the hockey stick. “Before I know it I feel something hard on the side of my head.”

Brown has since been convicted of child abuse in connection with this incident and Thomas’ family is suing the school and the deputy.

In an interview with FOX 2 Detroit, Marko said the teacher’s and district’s excuse is false.

“Her excuse was that she tried to throw the hockey stick at another child and accidentally hit her,” the lawyer said.

Thomas, who the lawyer says now has a brain trauma, said she immediately became dazed and confused after being struck by the object.

Her mental state got so bad that she wandered around the school after it happened.

“When this little girl’s mom came to school and wondered where is my daughter, they couldn’t even find her,” Marko said.

“She was found wandering the halls with blood streaming down her face,” the lawyer continued.

The girl was rushed to hospital where she was given staples to bind the injury.

Marko says Brown, who was sentenced last week in Michigan, also never apologized to the young girl or her family for the damage she had caused.

After the incident that happened last May, Thomas was found dazed and confused walking the hallways with blood streaming down her face, according to her lawyer.

Thomas was in court for the sentencing and said it was painful just to be around Brown.

“Just looking at her brought back all the memories of a blow to my head,” said the young girl.

Due to her ongoing trauma, Thomas had to move out of school and she is seeing a counselor to cope. She said she still has nightmares from the incident.

“It’s like flashing what happened that day,” Thomas said. “I was hit on the head. I remember kids just laughing at me.’

“My memories, now I have to wear glasses and I don’t remember very well,” she said.

As part of her plea deal, Brown will serve two years of probation. The teacher will also need to take anger management courses.

Marko told FOX 2 that the young girl’s family is suing Hope Academy’s teacher, school and employment agency.
