Detroit child, 6, shoots baby brother in face and shoulder as he plays with dad’s gun in backyard as baby jumps in bouncy seat

A six-year-old Detroit child shot his little brother in the face and shoulder while he was playing with his father’s gun.
The baby was jumping in his inflatable seat when their older brother fired two shots with the unrecorded semi-automatic around 7.40pm on Wednesday.
Detroit Police Department Deputy Chief Charles Fitzgerald said the children’s father was in the backyard of their home on Tennessee Street in the city’s east end with an uncle at the time. , while their mother was with a nearby relative.
Speaking at a press conference from the scene, Fitzgerald said the baby was now in stable condition.
The shooting took place in the 600 block of Tennessee Street in Detroit, Michigan, on Wednesday evening
Visibly shaken, he said: “Here we are again. Yet another senseless, preventable and horrific incident for this young child. It’s a baby – one year old.
“The baby was intoxicated, preliminary information is that another family member, a young child, got hold of a gun and shot his brother not once but twice .
“The one-year-old child was shot in the cheek and in the left shoulder.
“We are very, very lucky that this child is still with us.”
“We talk too often here about securing weapons,” he added.
“There are gun locks. There are gun safes. The highest shelf you can find in your house – put the gun as high as possible.

The deputy chief said the six-year-old was also likely “traumatized” by the incident.
Michigan’s East Side ward Syreeta Wilson said the local community was shaken by the incident but not surprised.

Investigators remain at the scene and Detroit police said evidence will be presented to a prosecutor.
Fitzgerald said Wednesday that everyone involved was cooperating with police.
