Fans mourn the untimely death of Lance Reddick, the actor with roles in the John Wick franchise, The wire, BoschAnd Zoom. There’s been an outpouring of tributes and mementos on social media, both from admirers of Reddick’s work and the actors who worked with him.
But Destiny players are mourning Reddick’s passing in a different way, by visiting his character, Commander Zavala, en masse at the Tower in Lot 2. Players hug, greet, or simply sit silently side-by-side in the game’s main social space, paying homage to the character and the man who voiced him.
Destiny players have a deep bond with Reddick’s Zavala. He has been with them since the beginning and served as the Titan Vanguard. For many longtime Destiny players (particularly Titan class players), Reddick has been a daily presence in their gaming lives for nearly a decade. Zavala is pivotal to the story of Destiny and an ever-present figure in the Tower. It’s not clear how, or even if, Bungie will replace Reddick as Zavala, or if Zavala will continue as a character in Lot 2.
Bungie has released a statement Friday night paid tribute to Reddick by saying, “His love for our community was reflected in Commander Zavala, in his uncompromising dedication to his craft, and in the radiant kindness that touched those around him.”
For now, here’s how Destiny players and Bungie employees pay tribute to the late actor.
What a moving tribute to Lance Reddick on the Tower. Thank you for everything you have brought to this world and in particular the Destiny 2 universe. We could always count on the commander to keep us focused on the mission at hand. Rest well, Lance! We will miss you forever pic.twitter.com/LpWMbfnvZN
