Marc Cherry, the creator of Desperate Housewives, has revealed how he really feels about The Real Housewives franchises after they were inspired by his own series.
Cherry’s series, which premiered in 2004, was a fictional show that showed a group of housewives living in the suburbs and their daily lives, the first episode beginning with a mysterious suicide of their close friend.
However, just two years later, in 2006, Bravo created a ‘real life’ version of Desperate Housewives, called The Real Housewives, starting the first franchise in Orange County, California.
While Desperate Housewives ended in 2012 after eight seasons, the Bravo reality series has gained extreme popularity and has expanded to more than five cities in the United States.
Now, in a new interview with PeopleCherry has revealed her true thoughts on the reality show.
“To be fair to them, they didn’t mention my name,” Cherry said of The Real Housewives.
“They just used the word,” he continued. ‘Our program came out and they took advantage of it. And you know what? That is the capitalist system.’
The writer also shared that he has no hard feelings towards the reality show or all the success it has had in recent years.

However, he admitted that sometimes people got confused between the two shows, like actor Tommy Tune.
‘Tommy got confused and said, “Oh, so you produce all the different cities?” And I looked at him; I had no idea what he was talking about,” Chery recalled.
“And then I realized, ‘Oh, you think I created the real-life Housewives franchise?’
The producer told the outlet that he has “no regrets” about ending the show in 2012, but admitted that The Real Housewives may have overshadowed Desperate Housewives because it is “still around” and creating new episodes and franchises.
“I envy the fact that they kept that franchise,” he told the outlet.
‘I certainly envy the good people who produce that show because it’s a train that keeps chugging along. Very good for them.’
The first The Real Housewives franchise, set in Orange County, recently celebrated 18 seasons on Bravo.
And it appears the network has no plans to slow down its various Real Housewives franchises anytime soon.

During a 2022 interview with The Hollywood Reporter Bravo executive Andy Cohen spoke about whether or not they are concerned about “oversaturation” within the franchise.
“In the past we were much more concerned,” he then admitted to the outlet.
‘When we decided to put in two a week, we all thought, “Oh my God, is this too much?” “Any possible turning point would have already occurred,” he explained.
“I still wake up every morning to people demanding the next trailer for whatever Housewives show is available next.”
