Tony Hudgell is back home after undergoing life-changing thigh and hip surgery in Sheffield

Tony Hudgell, who had his legs amputated after suffering horrific abuse at the hands of his biological parents, returned home after his hip and thigh surgery yesterday.

The nine-year-old from Kent, who has met the Princess of Wales on several occasions, has had prosthetic lower legs since he was a toddler and gets around with the help of crutches.

Tony returned home yesterday after undergoing life-changing surgery in Sheffield, which will allow him to be much more mobile as a teenager and adult.

Tony’s adoptive mother, Paula Hudgell, took X to take stock of their well-being after the operation. In one image, the nine-year-old appeared in good spirits as he cuddled his pet dog.

Elsewhere, Tony bravely demonstrated his newfound mobility skills by walking with the support of his adoptive father, Mark.

The nine-year-old will now be treated as an outpatient and have weekly appointments in Sheffield.

The operations, which will take place throughout the year, aim to restructure Tony’s thigh bone, according to a JustGiving page set up to help Tony.

Despite the painful process, Tony appeared in good spirits just two weeks after the operation.

The Pride of Britain award winner walked through his living room as his adoptive father Mark gave him extra support.

It comes after Tony Hudgell showed courage as he emerged from his hip and thigh operation with a smile on his face in March.

Tony’s biological parents, Anthony Smith, 47, and Jody Simpson, 24, were each jailed for ten years in 2018 for the torture they inflicted on their 41-day-old son in 2014, leaving him with injuries , including broken and torn fingers and toes. ligaments.

Despite suffering unspeakable abuse in the first days of his life, little Tony grew into a kind and determined boy who raised around £2 million for charity by walking great distances on his crutches.

What is Tony’s Law?

Tony’s Law is an amendment to the Police, Crime, Sentencing and Courts Bill which was passed by ministers on 30 November 2021.

It is named after Tony Hudgell, who was abused by his parents as a child and suffered life-changing injuries.

His parents, Tony Smith and Jody Simpson, were both sentenced to ten years in prison, which was the maximum sentence at the time.

The amendment will increase the maximum sentence for causing or permitting serious physical harm to a child from ten to 14 years, while causing the death of a child will increase from 14 years to life.

The tougher penalties planned could mean anyone causing or enabling the death of a child or vulnerable adult in their care will face a life sentence, instead of the current maximum sentence of 14 years.

Tony has already been hailed as a hero by Prince William and his wife Kate for his extraordinary fundraising walks to help vulnerable children.

He decided to raise £500 for the hospital that saved his life by walking 10km in 30 days in 2020 after being inspired by Captain Sir Tom Moore, who raised over £33million by walking in his garden.

In 2021, a foundation established in his name to improve the lives of children experiencing physical, emotional or psychological abuse provided more than 700 Christmas gifts to young people in need and also continued the tradition last Christmas.

The nine-year-old’s phenomenal fundraising achievements come despite an incredibly difficult start to life that led to him undergoing 23 operations and eight blood transfusions.

The horrific abuse he suffered at the hands of his biological parents caused serious injuries — and the infant also developed sepsis because Smith and Simpson waited 10 days before taking him to the hospital.

Her fortunes changed after her life was saved by specialists at Evelina London Children’s Hospital, of which the Princess of Wales is the official patron.

Then, in 2016, he finally found a loving home with Paula and Mark, who campaigned tirelessly for Tony’s interests since his welcome into the family – including in support of Tony’s Law, which introduced harsher sentences. severe penalties for cruelty towards children.

They also encouraged his fundraising efforts to help other children, which allowed him to rub shoulders with some very famous people.
