Derryn Hinch has revealed he was admitted to hospital last week with a heart problem.

The 80-year-old man suffered from atrial fibrillation, also known as an irregular heartbeat, and underwent electroshock therapy to restore his heart rhythm.

After being diagnosed a month ago, Hinch was treated at a Melbourne hospital and discharged the same day.

“I found myself out of breath and thought ‘this is not normal,’ so I went to my doctor and had an ECG (electrocardiogram),” he told the Herald of the sun on Saturday.

“My cardiologist checked me into the hospital and on Thursday they gave me an electric shock to my heart, which is pretty scary, but it worked,” he continued.

“My heart is back to a regular rhythm and I will see how my breathing improves in the coming weeks.”

Hinch said he is recovering well and in “good shape.”

It comes after the TV star revealed she is facing a “pretty serious” battle with skin cancer.

The Australian media personality said she is currently undergoing five weeks of daily radiation treatment in a bid to get rid of a melanoma on her forehead.

The cancerous spot just below her hairline was first discovered by doctors in February and removed, but doctors were unable to remove the entire area.

He then visited the Peter MacCallum Cancer Center to undergo further surgery to remove the melanoma and is now receiving radiation as “insurance”.

Derryn said he is taking the medical issue seriously and is just focusing on each day of the daily treatment program.

‘It’s not good. I’ve had two surgeries on my face and they still have to do radiation,” he told Herald of the sun.

‘The only good news is that they examined a spot I had surgery on about eight years ago on the other side (of his forehead) and that’s clear.

‘I mark each day and once that day passes, it disappears. It’s pretty serious, but as someone once said, that’s life.’

Derryn remained upbeat and said she is “feeling good” as she has three weeks of radiation treatment left at Alfred Hospital.

Earlier this year, Derryn revealed that she almost lost her life during a liver transplant in 2011 amid her first battle with cancer.

The former Victorian senator told how he died on the operating table and had to be resuscitated while detailing how grateful he feels for every day of his life.

‘I found out from my surgeon, Bob Jones, that I died on the table and they managed to recover me. Now I’m living 13 years longer than I should because I cared,” he told Herald of the sun At the moment.

‘Since then I have had a political career, I have been a senator. I’ve been in the journalism business for over 60 years.’

The politician underwent a liver transplant in 2011 after being diagnosed with aggressive cancer, and the organ was donated by Heath Gardner’s family.

But in 2020, the New Zealand-born broadcaster said he had not spoken to the Gardner family for more than two years after he started drinking alcohol again following the operation.

“They got really angry when I said, ‘yes, sometimes I’ve had a drink again.'” Even though I had my doctor’s permission, they didn’t like that,” he told the Herald Sun newspaper. Showbiz fired podcast.

“I will always credit that family for what they did and the fact that without them I wouldn’t be here,” he added, crediting their generosity for keeping him alive.
