A board-certified dermatologist has revealed the skincare mistakes you should avoid if you want to “age like a fetus,” and some of them are pretty surprising.

The crucial information was shared in a new video posted on TikTok by Dr. Shereene Idriss of Idriss Dermatology in New York City.

“The rule here is to achieve an even skin tone, because once your skin tone is even, there is no filter,” Dr. Idriss introduced her video before sharing her tips.

“You can fake it until you make it until you’re six feet under.”

The first tip was to avoid using only vitamin C in skin care.

“The rule here is to achieve an even skin tone, because once your skin tone is even, there is no filter,” Dr. Idriss introduced her video before sharing her tips.

“Starting with number one, many of you think that vitamin C is the holy grail ingredient when it comes to skin care and that you’re going to achieve a glowing complexion, but that’s not the case,” she explained.

When used topically, vitamin C works to protect the skin from external damage such as pollution, prevent aging, reduce dark circles and hyperpigmentation, among others.

“There are no miracle ingredients and vitamin C alone can do wonders for skin tone,” she explained.

The dermatologist said that vitamin C is just one component that you should use if you have uneven skin tone and dark spots.

The next no-no he warned about was relying on laser treatments.

‘Why are you going to get laser treatments if you don’t do the hard work at home?’ Dr. Idriss wondered.

“Skin care should be consistent daily to combat discoloration and hyperpigmentation, and lasers should be considered as a booster.”

“And believe me, I do a lot of laser treatments in my office, so this is against my own benefit,” he added.

The third thing she recommended avoiding was overuse or not using any products with retinol.

Retinol, a form of vitamin A and an ingredient often added to various skin care products and topical agents, helps increase skin cell production, according to Cleveland Clinic.

It also works to help unclog pores and exfoliate the skin, giving the skin anti-aging effects and helping to reduce the appearance of wrinkles.

“If you overuse retinol, you’ll get inflammation, and if your skin can’t tolerate it, inflammation is the worst thing you can do for your skin and your tone,” she explained.

“And, if you’re not using retinol, you’re really missing out, so consistency over intensity, try to incorporate it two to three times a week at least into your routine.”

And her last two pieces of advice went hand in hand: make sure you don’t expect results to happen overnight and wait for the sun to “cure you.”

“Expecting results overnight is not realistic; it takes time to reverse the damage and it has taken years to cause it,” Dr. Idriss warned.

“And lastly, put on the damn sunscreen,” he concluded.
