Derek Jeter’s lavish lakefront castle 50 miles from Manhattan set to be auctioned for $6.5 million

A New York castle with ties to Yankee baseball legend Derek Jeter will go up for auction in December, with a minimum purchase price of $6.5 million after it failed to spark interest with the original listing of $14.75 million.

Tiedemann Castle, a lakeside mansion just 50 miles from Manhattan in Orange County, will be up for auction Dec. 15 after being on and off the market since June 2018.

Jeter has a long history with the estate, as his grandfather was the adopted son of the Tiedemann family, who used to own it.

He spent the summers of his boyhood in the castle, according to a 2011 book called The Captain: The Journey of Derek Jeter by Ian O’Connor.

Located next to Greenwood Lake, the property is built in the style of a European castle, complete with a tower and battlements on the roof, along with a stone wall.

The property comes with waterfalls that flow into a private lagoon, a boathouse and dock, and even a diamond-shaped infinity pool shaped like a baseball.

The property has close ties to Yankees baseball legend Derek Jeter, who frequented the castle as a young boy, as his grandfather was the adopted son of the family that owned the castle.

The property includes four acres of land, a 9,000 square foot main house, a lakeside guest house and a pool house – and has approximately 220 feet of shoreline.

There are also 5 kitchens throughout the property which have been listed as ‘the ultimate full time home or the ideal weekend/summer getaway’

Paramount Realty USA, the company responsible for the home’s auction, said the property consists of four acres of land, a 9,000-square-foot main house, a lakeside guest house and a pool house.

The main building is huge and has 24 rooms, including a billiards room, multiple entertainment areas and a bar.

There are also five kitchens throughout the property that have been listed as ‘the ultimate full-time home or the ideal weekend/summer getaway’.

The listing for the property claims the house has undergone an “accurate 15-year extensive renovation with unparalleled attention to detail, transcending its original grandeur.”

It comes with nearly 700 feet of shoreline and ‘stunning’ water views along with wooded outdoor areas to explore.

A limited liability company affiliated with Jeter bought the property in the early 2000s, records show, though the price it was bought at remains unclear.

Jeter retired from a historic baseball career in 2014 and immediately started several companies, including an investment group that bought the Miami Marlins in 2017 for $1.7 billion.

He served as the team’s chief executive before selling his stake in the team and leaving his position.

The castle was first built around 1903 by a dentist in New York, but was restored by the Tiedemanns after a fire destroyed the interior.

While the current owner of the property remains unclear, the seller has decided to put the home up for auction because it “may bring some finality to the process,” according to Paramount Realty owner Misha Haghani.

The mansion is unique in the Greenwood Lake area, where the average price of a property is approximately $399,000.

The auction will be conducted in conjunction with real estate agent Diane Mitchell of Wright Bros. Real Estate in Nyack.

“This is a truly special property in so many ways, which is why we feel it is so appropriate to sell through a private auction – let the buyer name his price,” Mitchell said in a statement.
