Dr. Kristina Cain of Refresh Dental Spa (pictured) said that an increasing number of people turn to dentists to get Botox
For most of us, we pay a trip to the dentist for a regular checkup, but more and more women are flocking to clinics all over Australia to get facial makeup.
More and more patients are opting for anti-wrinkle injections, dermal fillers or Botox to treat the "gingival smiles" while in the dental chair.
Dr. Kristina Cain of Queensland, of Refresh Dental Spa, said that dentists are becoming regular doctors to treat painful or trustworthy ailments with injectable medications like Botox.
"We are very good injectors, we are very skilled in the anatomy of the face and we really understand the functionality of the head and neck," said Dr. Cain.
"Botox has a great place in dentistry: it can help relieve chronic jaw pain, reduce problems such as grinding that can wear teeth and dramatically improve gummy or asymmetrical smiles.
"A few years ago, dentistry and cosmetic injectables were a controversial mix, but when you think about it logically, dentists are very adept at assessing the overall balance and aesthetics of the face."
Before and after: The Brisbane dentist explained that Botox works by relaxing the muscles of the upper lip, reducing its elevation and, ultimately, reducing the inhibition of the "gummy smile".
The benefits of receiving Botox at the dentist
Facial professionals: Dentists are experts in the anatomy of the head and neck and really understand the symmetry of the face, so they are well positioned to help find a solution for any area that is of concern.
Expert injectors: Dentists are very skilled at injecting highly sensitive and hard-to-reach areas inside the mouth and have a comprehensive understanding of how the face works.
Clinical environment Dental surgeries adhere to the highest level of hygiene and cleanliness.
Holistic approach: Dental clinics are now much more than places to treat gums and teeth, and can take a holistic approach to solving the medical and aesthetic needs of patients.
He explained that more people turn to their dentists to ask about the insecurities they have with their mouths or their faces.
"Dentistry has really evolved as a profession, now we can treat patients in a much more holistic way and when they trust us about the insecurities they have over their mouth or face, we are now well positioned to find a solution," said Dr. Cain. He said.
"Everyone wants that perfect Hollywood smile, but if you sample too much chewing gum it can make a person feel very self-conscious.
"It can also be really effective to balance your face if you have an asymmetrical smile."
The Brisbane dentist, who specializes in cosmetic improvements, explained how Botox can be used to conceal the inhibition of the "gummy smile".
"An injectable like Botox, Dysport or Xeomin works by relaxing the muscle and preventing the upper lip from being able to stand up when it smiles or it can help realign the crooked lips," he said.
"I had a patient who felt very self-conscious about her gummy smile, but after an injectable muscle relaxant treatment, she had more confidence in work and in her love life.
"Botox is also extremely effective in treating debilitating jaw pain due to TMJ problems, it can help relax the masseter or temporalis muscle and for some it can provide immediate relief when other traditional treatments have failed."
Dr. Cain said dento-facial esthetics are used to make the most of other cosmetic dental treatments, so that wrinkles, fine lines or thin, puckered lips do not distract from your smile

Dr. Cain said there were many benefits of receiving Botox at the dentist.
"Facial aesthetics is used to make the most of other cosmetic dental treatments, so that wrinkles, fine lines or thin, puckered lips do not distract your smile.
"I was in the first training sessions for dentists in Australia in 2011 and quickly saw the amazing therapeutic benefits of incorporating facial injectables into our practice.
"I do not think you need to be a psychologist to see that if a person feels more confident about his appearance he will flow in all areas of his life."
