A dental hygienist has shared the five school meals with lunch boxes that she would trade to prevent your child from getting tooth decay due to too much sugar.

The World Health Organization (WHO) recommends that children eat no more than 25 grams or six teaspoons of sugar per day, but muesli bars, flavored yogurts, and muffins can contain more than double the suggested amount.

AIRFLOW Tabitha Acret from Dental Spa said it is easiest to prepare healthy lunch box meals and snacks at the weekend so that you don’t have to deal with stress on Monday morning.

So where do you start?

Flavored custard and fruit cups both contain added sugar with around 15 grams per serving.

“A good trade would be homemade chia pudding with vanilla as a flavor,” Tabitha said.

“This reduces sugar considerably and offers a nutritious and energetic snack on the healthier side.”

Top tips for reducing sugar in your child’s lunch box:

Many parents think that they have given their child a healthy lunch, but many options on the supermarket shelves contain a lot of sugar.

Always look at the nutrition panel on the back of your food. Something with the label ‘healthy’ is not always what it seems.

1. Choose natural ingredients and products

2. Ban the muesli bars

Muesli bars are a bit of a staple in our children’s lunch boxes. They are useful and the advertising and packaging often suggest that they are a healthy alternative.

However, granola bars can be filled with sugar – sometimes even more than a donut! They contain small amounts of fiber and therefore do not fill your little one for long.

When choosing a suitable muesli bar, try to keep it below 8 grams.

3. Water always wins

When filling our children’s drinking bottles for school, there is a lot of pressure to add something extra to the water.

Our aisles in the supermarket are filled with flavored options, giving children the impression that they are a healthy and acceptable alternative to water.

More often than not, these waters are filled with sugar, so I cannot recommend enough that it is best to stay with fresh water for school.

4. Fear the spread

The fillings on our children’s sandwiches can have a huge impact on their daily sugar consumption. Nutella is on average 58 percent sugar, jam 60 percent and honey as much as 80 percent.

We not only think about sugar, but also about the sugar crash and the maintenance of their energy level for longer periods of learning. Stay with your lean meat, cheese, and salads for a much more satisfying food.

“You may or may not be surprised to learn, this is more than a can of coke! I can’t imagine many parents putting a can of coke into their five-year-old’s lunch box, “Tabitha said.

‘Many parents package snack packages with chips and cookies, simply because they are not aware of the added sugar content.

SWAP MUFFINS FOR BOILED EGGS

The average blueberry muffin purchased in the store contains 36 grams of sugar, which is 11 grams more than the total recommended daily allowance for children.

“Muffins are often advertised as a healthy snack, but to be honest, it’s just a cake in an oversized cupcake bowl,” she said.

“For example, hard-boiled eggs are a great healthy snack for children – added protein and omega 3, minus the sugar.”
