Frank Lampard has ruled himself out of the race to become Canada’s new head coach but remains eager to return to coaching.

The former Chelsea and Everton coach emerged as a surprise candidate for the job earlier this month to lead Canada to the 2026 World Cup, which they co-host.

But according to The TelegraphLampard decided not to take over after holding initial talks with the Canadian Soccer Federation.

The 45-year-old attended England training ahead of the Three Lions’ friendlies against Belgium and Brazil last month and remains eager to return to coaching.

“I’m enjoying being with the family and hope to return at some point,” he said.

“Hopefully something comes along that seems right to me. I really want to get back to work but, as I repeat, I’m enjoying family life.

‘You love the job. You understand the rigors of this today. I have enjoyed all the clubs I have worked with.

‘They have all been great challenges for different reasons. “I enjoy working with players, improving the players and the team, so let’s see what’s next.”

The former England international has been out of work since ending last season as Chelsea’s caretaker manager after the Blues sacked Graham Potter.

Lampard led Derby County to the Championship play-offs in 2019 in his first managerial job but lost to Aston Villa in the final before taking over at Chelsea two months later.

The former England star guided the Blues to fourth place in the Champions League and the FA Cup final, which they lost to Arsenal.

Lampard was sacked in January 2021 with Chelsea ninth in the Premier League, before replacing Rafael Benitez at Everton 12 months later.

He guided the Toffees to safety but was sacked less than a year into his role in January last year after a run of one win in 11 games left Everton 19th in the table.

The former Chelsea star returned to Stamford Bridge last April following Potter’s dismissal, but won just once in 11 games in charge.

Canada is looking for a new coach to replace John Herdman, who resigned at the end of August to take charge of Toronto FC in MLS.

Herdman’s former assistant Mauro Biello has served as interim coach for the past eight months.
