Denman earthquake, New South Wales: A magnitude 5.0 earthquake hits the east coast of Australia; Sydney residents report tremors

A magnitude 5.0 earthquake was reported near Denman, New South Wales, and Australians living hours away in Sydney felt tremors.

The earthquake was recorded by the scientific agency Geoscience Australia (GA).

Denman is located three hours drive northwest of Sydney and about 135 kilometres west of the city of Newcastle.

Australia’s Bureau of Meteorology announced on Monday that the earthquake did not pose a tsunami threat to Australia’s land borders.

The quake was reported to have occurred at a depth of 10 km and 14 km east of Denman, according to the GA website.

Sydney residents reported feeling tremors. “My apartment just moved… who else felt it (the earthquake) in Sydney?” posted one.

‘Was there just an earthquake in Sydney or did my building shake just for fun?’

A third said: “I just felt a real earthquake in Sydney. The TV on the wall was shaking, as was the bed I was sitting on. It was crazy!”

Regional New South Wales residents closest to the epicentre, in Mudgee and Gulgong (a two-hour drive west of Denman) reported walls and floors shaking.

“The dogs were barking… I was so scared,” one person posted.

Others further west in Dunedoo and someone in Anna Bay, north of Newcastle on the coast, also reported feeling tremors.

Residents in suburban Newcastle also felt the quake.

“The stuff on my table in Swansea Heads shook,” one person commented. “It didn’t even occur to me that it was an earthquake.”

“I thought my house was going to fall down… I’m in Muswellbrook, we’ve had 2 aftershocks so far, the south side of town has lost power,” another person posted.

On X Anna Edwards posted photos of the walls of her house cracked as a result of the earthquake.

‘Well, that was the first time I felt a real earthquake! The house shook, the walls cracked. It was crazy!’

Lavis Mitre 10 in Muswellbrook posted a photo of items strewn across its corridors following the earthquake.

“Well that was epic, wasn’t it?” she captioned the photo.
