Suspected Islamist militants killed at least 19 people and set fire to a medical facility in an attack on a village in eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) early Sunday, March 12, 2023, two district officials and a resident said.
The attack took place in Kirendra village in North Kivu province, a few kilometers from the site of another attack in a nearby village that killed at least 35 people last week.
The army blamed last week’s attack on the Allied Democratic Forces (ADF), a Ugandan armed group based in eastern Congo that has declared allegiance to Islamic State and conducts frequent raids on villages.
He blamed Sadam Patanguli, a resident of a nearby village and a member of a local civil organization, for today’s attack on this group as well.
“Shooting was heard in the vicinity of Kirendra.
The ADF arrived and set fire to a hospital after looting its medicines. They also set fire to a hotel.” He said the militants kidnapped a number of people, and they are now missing. Two officials in the area confirmed details of the burning of the buildings and the death toll.
