Setback: Delivery app Getir said it would stop working in Britain, as well as the United States, Germany and the Netherlands.
Food delivery app Getir is pulling out of the UK, dealing a major setback for the online grocery industry.
The Turkish technology company, which also owns the Gorillas app, said it would resign in Britain, as well as the United States, Germany and the Netherlands.
The move will put 1,500 UK jobs at risk, including warehouse staff, managers and delivery drivers. Getir, founded in 2015, said it would focus on its Turkish business as it tries to shore up its finances.
But its departure from the UK, where it launched three years ago, is a dramatic fall from grace for Getir, which offers fast food delivery.
At its peak in 2022, the group was valued at £9.6 billion and was a major rival to the likes of Deliveroo.
It also acquired rival German brand Gorillas that same year. But as interest rates have skyrocketed, the company has struggled to maintain momentum.
“Getir expresses its sincere gratitude for the dedication and hard work of all its employees in the United Kingdom, Germany, the Netherlands and the United States,” the company said.
