Deepseek will be prohibited from all federal government devices as the Albanese government takes energetic measures against Chinese chatbot of AI, citing unpalified national security risks.
The launch of the Deepseek generative chatbot shook the technological actions of the United States last week in the midst of concerns about censorship and data security.
The Secretary of the Department of Interior Affairs signed a directive on Tuesday that prohibits the program of all the federal government systems and devices for national security reasons after advice of intelligence agencies that presents an unacceptable risk.
The Minister of Internal Affairs, Tony Burke, said that the decision was not affected by the country of origin, China, but for its risk to the government and its assets.
“Albanese’s government is taking quick and decisive measures to protect national security and national interest of Australia,” Burke said.
“AI is a technology full of potential and opportunity, but the government will not hesitate to act when our agencies identify a risk of national security.”
Government departments and agencies must inform matters of origin as soon as possible to ensure that the application does not remain on any device, and they are prevented from reinstalling it.
The decision occurs almost two years after the Albanese government issued its prohibition of the application of Chinese Tiktok social networks, citing risks of “security and privacy.”
The Minister of Sciences, Ed Husic, said in January that he foresaw similar discussions that occurred on Depseek.
“I think people will naturally gravitate towards that. I think there will be parallel to what you have seen with the discussion about Tiktok that also arise in Deepseek. I wouldn’t be surprised if that emerges, ”he said.
Australia is the last country to prohibit Deepseek on government devices, after Taiwan, Italy and some federal agencies of the United States before they moved to block the application.
