A young police officer has been praised for her “selfless” action after helping rescue a 60-year-old woman from her car which sank into a creek on Sydney’s northern beaches.

The 60-year-old driver crashed into the creek after the car lost control on Pittwater Road in Dee Why about 12.30am on Sunday.

The car crashed into bushes and landed in Dee Why lagoon.

Officers from Northern Beaches Police Area Command found the driver, and sole occupant of the VW Golf sedan, still inside the partially submerged car.

The 60-year-old woman and sole occupant of the vehicle was freed just before the car was completely submerged in the Dee Why lagoon, in the north of Sydney.

New South Wales Police said in a news release on Sunday morning that the driver was recovering in hospital after she was pulled from the car by probation officer Kiesha McJannet.

Officer McJanet rescued the woman from drowning and freed her from the car. that “it was quickly taking on water.”

The car was completely submerged shortly after. after the woman was rescued.

NSW Ambulance paramedics examined the 60-year-old woman at the scene before she was taken to Northern Beaches Hospital for observation.

Acting Inspector Adrian De Visser praised Constable McJannet for his efforts.

“Probator Constable McJannet has only been with NSW Police since June 2023 – her selfless actions in entering the water and saving a woman from a precarious position deserve praise,” he said.

Crews will attempt to recover the vehicle from the lagoon on Sunday.
