Death of veteran actor, 81, who starred in The Bill is announced as inquest is held after he died following surgery

Actor Tony Mathews died after surgery in 2023, it has been confirmed.

The veteran actor was best known for roles in films such as The Bill, Inspector Morse and Poirot.

Tony, from Canterbury, Kent, also starred in Ridley Scott’s 1977 war film The Duellists, his first screen role, and played Royston Andrews in The Governor.

It was today confirmed that an inquest into his death will be held in Kent following his death at Queen Elizabeth Queen Mother Hospital in December 2023.

The seasoned television star first appeared in The Duellists in 1977, playing the role of General Treillard’s aide-de-camp.

He also played Lord Lucan in Escape and appeared in Winston Churchill: The Wilderness Years as Anthony Eden.

He played Lord Lucan in the television show Escape in 1980.

He then appeared in two episodes of The Bill in the early ’90s, playing Cosgrove and Farquharson.

He followed this with a role as a pathologist in Inspector Morse in 1992.
