The highly anticipated Deadpool and Wolverine hit box office records with $205 million in revenue.

The debut of Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman, considered the definitive duo, is the eighth biggest opening of all time and by far the biggest opening for an R-rated film. The first two spots on that list are occupied by previous installments in the franchise.

The third installment of the Deadpool series also broke box office records worldwide with $233.3 million internationally for a global total of $438.3 million.

That makes the Marvel Cinematic Universe film the biggest global opening since Avatar: Way of the Water in 2022. Deadpool & Wolverine was expected to gross between $160 million and $175 million ahead of its release.

The X-Men universe film is also the biggest opening of Reynolds and Jackman’s careers, the biggest July opening of all time and the biggest opening of 2024 so far.

Deadpool & Wolverine is also the highest-grossing opening since 2021’s Spider-Man: No Way Home.

Disney acquired the X-Men intellectual property during its merger with 20th Century Fox in 2019.

Before Deadpool and Wolverine, Disney’s highest-grossing R-rated opening was 1990’s Pretty Woman, starring Julia Roberts and Richard Gere, with $178.4 million (before adjusting for inflation).

The film received critical acclaim, was packed with cameos and Easter eggs that thrilled audiences, and earned a 97% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes.

The third installment of the Wade Wilson/Deadpool saga built on the success of the first two films, which grossed $133.7 million domestically in February 2016 and $125.5 million in 2018.

Director Shawn Levy was ecstatic on Sunday morning with the results of Deadpool and Wolverine, saying: ‘All of us who did Deadpool and Wolverine We are completely surprised and thrilled by the way our film has been received by audiences around the world.

‘So many people put their best into this film, and to see it embrace both its heart and humor is everything we hoped for. Special thanks to Asad Ayaz and the entire Disney PR and marketing team who worked tirelessly to spread the word and put together a campaign that was as bold as the film we were trying to make. Truly a dream team effort on this film.’

“Making this film has been the privilege and thrill of my career, and this amazing weekend is one we will never forget,” Levy said, according to Deadline.
