Summer tent pole Deadpool 3 will swim into theaters a little later than originally expected. Marvel Studios announced late Wednesday that the high-profile threequel will now hit the domestic box office on July 26, 2024, instead of May 3, 2024.
Captain America: New World Orderwhich previously had that date in July, has been moved nine months to February 14, 2025.
In other moves, Marvel’s anti-hero centric film Lightning strikesstarring Florence Pugh and Sebastian Stan, has been rescheduled for July 25, 2025 (postponed from December 20, 2024). Sheetstarring Mahershala Ali, has been delayed nine months and moved to November 7, 2025, back from February 14, 2025. Sheet And Lightning strikes were planning to go into production this summer, but had no scripts ready in time, so they halted during the writers’ strike in May.
At this stage, Marvel now only has one film on the 2024 calendar (Deadpool), but four in 2024 (including Fantastic fourpreviously set for May 5, 2024).
Disney insisted on non-Marvel changes Mufasa: The Lion King until December 20, 2024 (returns from July 5, 2024). Barry Jenkins directs the prequel.
Deadpool 3 – Ryan Reynolds back in the titular role and producer’s chair – was one of a number of Hollywood productions that had to stop filming when the actors went on strike in July.
Marvel and the Deadpool The team, which also includes director Shawn Levy and co-star Hugh Jackman, took action Tuesday night after SAG announced it had reached a tentative agreement with Hollywood studios to end the strike, which lasted 117 days. Insiders say Levy is scheduled to resume filming in London in the next two weeks (Marvel and Disney paid to keep the sets intact while a crew stands by).
The filmmakers plan to open the movie in the summer, which is prime time for superhero fare, and will need all the extra time they can get to film the second half of the movie. According to sources, Levy and Reynolds used the downtime during the attack to edit what they shot and begin working on special effects.
Captain America: New World Orderstarring Anthony Mackie as Captain America/Sam Wilson, completed principal photography prior to the strikes, so the move to a later date was not expected as many thought it would shift to May 2024.
All Hollywood studios are rushing to rearrange their release schedules now that the strike is over. For example, within hours of the deal being announced, Sony announced the release of Poison 3 from July 12, 2024 to November 8, 2024, to provide more support.
Dozens of other titles have already pushed back their release dates due to the actors’ strike – and the preceding writers’ strike, which ended at the end of September – and more are sure to follow. In recent weeks, Disney has postponed its 2024 spring tentpoles Snow White And Elio by a year or more, while Paramount delayed the release of the next one Mission Impossible term from summer 2024 to 2025 And A quiet place: day one by a few months, from spring to June 2024.
As for Reynolds, in his first tweet after the strike, the actor assured fans that the film would be ready for the summer by sharing a photo of Dogpool, a doggy version of Deadpool who appears in the film. “Did Dogpool save the day?” Not a chance in Gremlin hell,” Reynolds captioned the photo. “But she’s currently causing nightmares in the Disney plush merchandise department. Coming with the movie, summer 2024.
