Tottenham defender Micky van de Ven has been mocked on social media after his two slips in quick succession led to Newcastle goals.

The Dutchman earned praise during an impressive debut season at Tottenham but suffered a nightmare first half at St James’ Park.

Van de Ven was caught out for Newcastle’s first goal, slipping after Alexander Isak deflected it and the Swedish striker put the hosts ahead in the 30th minute.

Newcastle doubled their lead two minutes later in similar fashion, with Van de Ven falling to the turf again and Anthony Gordon firing in a second to secure a 2-0 half-time lead.

Rival fans took to social media to share Van de Ven’s difficult first half at St James’ Park.

A number of memes were posted about the Dutchman’s slip, including a reference to Steven Gerrard’s infamous slip for Liverpool against Chelsea.

Rio Ferdinand, who described Van de Ven as a Rolls-Royce before the match, admitted that the defender had a time to forget.

The former Man United centre-back highlighted that the defender had failed to slow down on both occasions, causing him to slip.

“We talk about how good this season has been, but today is 45 minutes to forget,” Ferdinand said.

‘It’s a great skill on your Isak’s part, but you have to slow down to defend.

‘If you don’t brake your feet you won’t be able to change direction, this happens here.

“He doesn’t change, he can change direction because he came too fast, he didn’t slow down and in the end they put him on his butt.”

“It doesn’t slow down your feet, at that point you can’t sit up and you can’t turn, so it becomes impossible to turn in another direction.”

Van de Ven and Tottenham’s nightmarish afternoon continued when Isak caught out the Dutchman in the second half.

Isak was quick to score Newcastle’s third of the afternoon.
