The end of the Ashes marked not only England’s defeat but also the beginning of fatherhood for Dawid Malan, whose firstborn child arrived when he fought Australia.

The 34-year-old scored just 10 runs when Joe Root and Co sank to another catastrophic batting collapse on Sunday, with Australia winning the series 4-0.

While Malan clung to his latest foray Down Under, his wife Claire couldn’t take it any longer. She was expecting a baby girl in six weeks, but was due to give birth on Saturday at Harrogate Hospital.

By the time the Yorkshire star was thrown out by Cameron Green on Sunday morning, he was already a father.

Under a photo of their one-day daughter’s tiny feet, Claire announced the name on Instagram: “Summer Skye Malan.”

She continued: ‘Our girl gave us a huge shock when we arrived 6 weeks early yesterday. There are no words to explain love.’

Malan will desperately rush home to meet his daughter in Britain, who no doubt wants to put England’s miserable journey around the world behind her.

The London-born star was put under enormous pressure by Green’s relentless pace in the final innings, and was hit on the helmet en route to an eventual dismissal.

Former England captain Alastair Cook issued a scathing verdict after seeing his country struggle since it landed in enemy territory.

“Once they’re put under pressure, you see how much determination there is. They showed a lot in Sydney and they used it all there,” Cook said.

‘That was very hard watching. That must be our soil. There couldn’t be a worse place than being kicked out in an hour and a half.’
