During the wide-ranging interview, the former heroin addict also spoke openly about her tumultuous upbringing, her drug addiction, and how she even used cocaine with her mother.
The TV star said of his death, his voice breaking: “I wish I were here so I could tell him how wonderful life is.” I never thought he would die at 50, he was a great person, he still had so much more to give. It was the worst thing that has ever happened to me.
“She taught me a lot in her death, she tried to take care of me, she was very brave, she never cried and never complained.”
She added: ‘In her last days she let me change her and put her to bed, which she never did, she never wanted me to see her naked. Even when she was dying she gave me that thing about herself that she had never had before and it was very nice.
“That night she was very distraught and called me mum, then she slept for three days and I was with her when she passed away and it was really lovely. “I kept talking to her the whole time because your audition is the last thing. That goes.
‘I wanted her to know she was going to be okay, that’s what I kept repeating. Because after all she was still worried about me, she knew how important she was to me. So I kept telling her that she was going to be fine.’
In the podcast, Davina also described in detail Caroline’s deteriorating health and the period leading up to her diagnosis.
The star explained: ‘She was a bit reserved. She had just turned 50, she once accidentally ran into a door and she was always dropping things, she was forgetful and had back problems. She didn’t know if she was menopausal but she knew something was going on.
“One morning she had been screaming for help and I walked in the door and she had been on the floor all night, she had gotten dirty and was paralyzed in half of her body, I called an ambulance but they told me it wasn’t a stroke cerebral…
‘They did all these tests and the doctor said you have primary lung cancer in both lungs and two tumors in the brain and maybe you have bone cancer too. She looked at me and said, “It’s all my fault” after all that smoking.
Davina then described calling her mom and dad to tell them the terrible news and said she felt like she “couldn’t breathe” while she was in the hospital hallway.
But on a positive note, Davina told how she and her sister had much more open conversations during the final weeks of her life.
She said: ‘I wouldn’t let him exclude me. We had the most incredible talks when she was dying, the best seven weeks with my sister were the last seven weeks of her life.
“He was in the hospital for a month and then we came back to the cabin and just hung out. His first chemotherapy was booked for two days after he died, we made a list of things to do: go to France one more time, see friends.
Elsewhere on the podcast, he opened up about his difficult upbringing and spoke candidly about his upbringing, saying that he first tried drugs at a very young age.
She said: “I did drugs at 12 with my mother, I smoked marijuana at 12, I did cocaine twice with my mother at 15, cocaine with my sister at 14. If people had known I wouldn’t have been able to see my mom.
“But I’m not a victim but I’m happy, I’ve chosen to learn after the curveballs. The small victories in my life were huge.”
He said he took drugs regularly from the age of 14 after moving to London while trying to cope with his alcoholic mother’s abandonment during childhood, before turning his life around and joining a Narcotics Anonymous course.
Davina explained: ‘I moved to London when I was 14 and I was going out, doing drugs and meeting people who wanted to do drugs. I was a braggart and a people pleaser; at that time the drugs made me feel like I was safe, they filled the void inside me, when the drugs ran out I was empty again and needed a man or attention to fill me up again.
“There was danger everywhere; I don’t know how I’m still alive.” I was addicted to heroin for the last three months of drug use. And then I knew I had to change.
“My friend made an intervention after using cocaine for 24 hours: she told me: ‘I know you’ve been lying to me, you’re the topic of every dinner party, everyone knows it,’ and I felt so ashamed that I didn’t know what to say but then I left and cried.
‘I thought I was screwed. I need to change. I called my friend who was clean and she took me to a meeting. I went to a meeting every day for 90 days. I would have done anything to stop feeling this way. I owe my life to NA; she gave me my career.’
She continued: ‘I went twice a day. NA was the only place where I felt normal, other people were like me. I realized the power of honesty.’
Davina has been open about her struggle with drug addiction in the early days of her presenting career, but has now been clean for over 25 years.
The star previously recalled the complicated relationship she had with her alcoholic mother Florence, adding that she started partying as a teenager because she had no matriarchal figure to turn to.
Davina said she spiraled into drug addiction, which in the worst cases led to hospitalization.
Elsewhere on the podcast, he opened up about his difficult upbringing and spoke candidly about his upbringing, saying he first tried drugs at a very young age (pictured in 1995).
She said in 2020: “It was very scary because it was a very gradual overdose.” I had taken a cocktail of drugs because I didn’t want to feel normal. I was constantly trying to escape from myself: I was like a piece of fruit rotting inside.
“So I thought, ‘Well, I’ll just take a Valium,’ and the next thing I knew, I woke up in the hospital. At my lowest point, when I was filled with self-loathing, it was literally a case of ‘get clean or die.’ “.
Davina added that it was her best friend, her father and her stepmother who helped her come to her senses and she signed up for Narcotics Anonymous.
