David Warner’s impressive personal honour as Australia beat West Indies in T20 opener – with tourists accused of  playing ‘dumb cricket’ by Mark Waugh

  • Personal milestones continue for David Warner
  • He has represented Australia in all three formats 100 times.
  • Mark Waugh felt West Indies were playing ‘dumb cricket’
  • The Australians won the first T20 match in Hobart by 11 runs

David Warner claimed another individual honor on Friday, becoming the first player to represent Australia 100 times across all three formats of the sport.

Warner, 37, looked set for a blistering century in his historic match, plundering 70 off just 36 balls at the top of the order as the hosts smashed 213 in their first T20 match against the West Indies in Hobart.

The tourists responded well, scoring runs with ease in the first few overs, only to fall short by 11 runs after losing several wickets late in the contest.

When key figure Nicholas Pooran was caught at the boundary by Sean Abbott bowling Adam Zampa in the 15th over, Australian cricket great Mark Waugh did not mince his words in the commentary box.

“That’s very, very silly cricket, you can’t put it any other way,” Waugh told Fox Cricket viewers.

Australia beat the West Indies by 11 runs in the first T20 match in Hobart, with cricket legend Mark Waugh criticizing tourists for playing “dumb cricket”

‘That’s a big limit out there… the biggest limit on the ground.

‘Sean Abbott, who has great hands, is a tall boy, it’s going to be (very) difficult to give him the approval.

‘I (also) think it’s the third catch (they’ve offered) on that patch of grass, maybe the fourth.

“Zampa… it was amazing bowling from him, but not so good batting from the West Indians.”

Warner also confirmed his plans for 2024 when he picked up man of the match honours.

“I feel renewed, with a lot of energy… I’m excited,” he said. ‘I want to play in the T20 World Cup (in the US and the Caribbean) and finish there.

“I’m excited, it’s a good journey we’ve been on as a team.”

The second match of the T20 series will be on Sunday night at the Adelaide Oval starting at 7pm.
