David Moyes hailed West Ham’s journey from relegation candidates to European contenders after his side advanced to a third quarter-final in three years.

Goals from Lucas Paqueta, Jarrod Bowen, Aaron Cresswell and a brace from Mohammed Kudus saw the Hammers come back from a 1-0 deficit to beat German side SC Freiburg in the second leg of their round of 16 tie.

West Ham were 17th in the Premier League when Moyes took charge in December 2019, but he will now lead the club to their third consecutive European quarter-final. The Hammers reached the semi-finals of this competition in 2022 before winning the Europa Conference League last season.

“For us to be in another quarter-final is a brilliant achievement,” Moyes said.

“Where we come from, a team that was avoiding relegation to get to Europe, and then do it for the second year and win a trophy.

“The club has come a long way in the last three years. It is difficult to point out how good it has been because for a long time it has not been in the strongest position and we want to try to improve it if we can.

“When I came in I said I didn’t want to manage a team at the bottom of the league, I want to manage a team that would challenge higher up. Overall, we’ve been that. We’ve had our moments.

“I am very, very happy that we were able to give something to West Ham. We have brought in good players. The public is watching tonight, for example, Kudus’ performance, everyone knows what Paqueta can do.

‘Bowen too, coming from lower league clubs in England and now an England international.

“If you look at that journey, and I know European football is probably the focus tonight, there are a lot of good things that have happened in recent years at West Ham.”

The draw for the quarter-finals and semi-finals of the Europa League will take place on Friday.
