Luiz’s deal expires this summer and the club would like to extend his stay.

But the former Chelsea star will move on to new pastures after two seasons in the Emirates.

Luiz’s experience was a key factor for Mikel Arteta during his reign and the club will now be forced to sign a replacement.

Luiz cost Arsenal £ 8 million when he moved from Chelsea to London in August 2019. Since then, he has played 73 times for the Gunners, scoring four goals.

He helped Arsenal win the FA Cup last season, beating his old club 2-1 in the Wembley final. It was the third time that Luiz had won the trophy.

The one-time Brazil international has played in 30 games for Arsenal this season, scoring twice. He has been named by Arteta 17 times in the starting line-up in the Premier League and seven times in the Europa League.

He suffered a hamstring injury in the recent 2-0 win over Newcastle United and has missed Arsenal’s subsequent league games against West Brom and Chelsea.

Luiz also missed the second leg of Arsenal’s UEFA Europa League semi-final against Villarreal, leaving the competition. However, he had remained on the bench during the first leg.

Arsenal, currently ninth in the Premier League, has two more games to go this season – Wednesday at Crystal Palace and at home to Brighton on Sunday 23 May.
