David Luiz has knocked back his critics after a phenomenal defensive display in Arsenal’s 2-0 win against Manchester City.
The Brazilian central defender made a disastrous cameo in the Premier League a little over a month ago against Pep Guardiola, who gave Raheem Sterling the opening goal before succeeding in getting dropped for a challenge over Riyad Mahrez.
While Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang was the hero on the other side with the two goals, this time Luiz put on a great show at Wembley, taking his head to many crosses and making a noticeable block of a targeted Sterling effort.
David Luiz hit back at critics after his performance in Arsenal’s win over Man City
The Brazilian had a terrible time in Etihad last month and was expelled when Arsenal was defeated
After his exploits, Luiz seemed to want to set the record, stating that he used his experience to get back from that Etihad nightmare situation last month and deliver an excellent performance in Wembley.
“There was a lot of criticism about me, I think you can say that,” Luiz told BT Sport after the Gunners beat City.
“That’s part of football. During my career I understood that part of football is about survival. You will defend your team every day and the other people will support different teams. ‘
“It’s about survival, so I did. I worked hard every day after my mistakes. I took the blame, I was mature enough to understand that. I was also modest [enough] to work more for the team.
But a month on Luiz was the rock in Arsenal’s defense to help them qualify for the final
The Brazilian set the record straight, saying he used his experience to bounce back
“We have a final to play this season. We are going to try to win a title for this club, because I always say that this club deserves to shine again. ‘
The 33-year-old Brazilian is one of the more experienced members of the current Arsenal team, but took the opportunity to praise the team’s modesty and spoke highly of boss Mikel Arteta’s philosophy.
However, Luiz insisted that the Gunners have not yet reached their final goal and still need to make progress to once again become a challenge for the big trophies.
“It was a great result against one of the best teams in the world. We were humble and understood the way we should play. We took the opportunity to score, ”continued Luiz.
Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang scored both goals across the field at Wembley
“We need to be mature to understand what levels we are in the process. We have a great coach who wants to bring us the best football for this club, but not zero to a hundred.
“We have to understand that every day. The spirit was great and I am happy for the team because this team deserved it.
“In modern football, the team understood how everyone should defend, fight, have the spirit and play every ball 100 percent.
“It might be easier to keep the ball, not run like we did, Aubameyang was miles ahead of us, but we are humble. [We knew that] if you play, you can [then] hurt the opponents. ‘
But the Brazilian said the team won because they had been humble
The squad was then celebrated in the Wembley locker room after the win
Former Manchester United defender Rio Ferdinand also gave Luiz a rave review for his performance, while also emphasizing the compact nature of Arsenal’s defensive stance.
“He has received a lot of criticism in recent seasons, and rightly so. He made mistakes and you are criticized for that.
The way they lined up helped him – with three center backs and they packed the center of the field. They played with defensive security.
The former Manchester United defender was impressed by the compact nature of the defense
“There was stability in how they played. They are defensively composed. ‘
Former Arsenal and Manchester United striker Robin van Persie agreed with his former teammate and fellow expert on the defense structure of Arsenal and Luiz.
The Dutchman claimed that he would try to bully Luiz if he played him for the quarter-final victory of the North London FA Cup at Sheffield United, but praised the Brazilian for this showing.
‘It was amazing. David Luiz put his body in front of balls, he blocked every ball, I think he headed 25 balls away. He was fantastic, ‘added the Dutchman.
Robin Van Persie also praised the way Luiz threw his body for a purposeful Sterling shot
