He Chicago Cubs made a series of roster moves before Sunday’s series finale against the Cincinnati Reds, selecting the infielder’s contract David Botte from Triple-A Iowa.
In corresponding moves, the Cubs opted for infielder Nick Madrigal to Iowa and sent the pitcher Adbert Alzolay to the 60-day disabled list to leave a 40-man spot for Bote’s return.
Bote, who signed a five-year contract with the Cubs before the 2020 season, has not played in the major leagues since 2022. He appeared in 41 games for the Cubs, with four home runs and 12 RBIs in 127 plate appearances.
He spent all of 2023 with the Iowa Cubs and began the season there in 2024, with seven home runs, 15 RBIs and a .259/.342/.546 line in Triple-A.
Madrigal has struggled mightily during the 2024 season, posting a .221/.280/.256 line. He is 4-for-24 in his last 12 games with the Cubs and has posted a negative 0.5 WAR on the season.
Alzolay went on the disabled list in mid-May with a right forearm strain. He struggled mightily out of the Cubs’ bullpen this season, posting a 1-4 record and a 4.67 ERA in 18 total appearances. He allowed 19 hits and nine earned runs in 17.1 innings and allowed six home runs in those games.
It is unknown at this time what his timeline for returning will be, but he will now be out until at least mid-July due to the illness.
The Cubs will try to capture the final game of a three-game set against the Reds, with Ben Brown taking the ball on Sunday afternoon. The first launch is scheduled for 1:20 p.m.
