David Beckham inadvertently found himself in trouble on Wednesday, and it had nothing to do with the luxury coffee blender he plugs into a new ad.
The former Manchester United and England midfielder has been recruited as the face of Ninja kitchen appliances, but a new advert has left viewers raving about the popular brand.
The 30-second festive commercial sees Beckham, 49, go it alone to host Christmas dinner, with no time to waste – a near-impossible task he only achieves with the help of his handy Ninja accessories.
But the former England captain’s apparent indoor use of a wood-burning oven, valued at £350 and designed primarily for outdoor use, has led to the brand being reported to the Advertising Standards Authority.
The guidance in Ninja’s own user manual says: ‘DO NOT use indoors. If used under an overhead cover, toxic fumes, including carbon monoxide, can accumulate and cause serious bodily injury or death.
Beckham’s deal with SharkNinja, the latest in a series of lucrative endorsements, was announced in May and is understood to be worth £1million.
The Advertising Standards Authority has been informed about a new advert starring David Beckham.
In the advertisement for Ninja kitchen appliances, Beckham uses a wood-burning oven indoors, even though the brand’s own user manual indicates that it should only be used outdoors.
SharkNinja representatives have since confirmed that all oven-related scenes were filmed outdoors, while the holiday commercial was given the green light by advertising licensing organization Clearcast ahead of its launch on national television.
A spokesperson told MailOnline: ‘David Beckham was cooking in an outdoor kitchen during the filming of this advert, in accordance with the instructions for use of the Woodfire Outdoor Oven.
“The ad was approved by Clearcast before airing.”
The former footballer developed a passion for cooking while playing in continental Europe with Real Madrid, AC Milan and Paris Saint Germain.
Close family friend Eva Longoria previously called Beckham “a great cook” after he gave her tips on how to make a traditional shepherd’s pie.
She told the Table Manners podcast: ‘David is a great cook. He didn’t teach me, but he told me that the trick is ketchup.
And he added: “It makes a good bolognese.” He really likes cooking, as you can see on his Instagram.’
The Ninja controversy seemed to be forgotten on Tuesday night when Beckham, accompanied by his wife Victoria, attended his first state banquet at Buckingham Palace.

The Beckhams, whose invitation was kept secret until the event began, joined King Charles, Queen Camilla and the Prince of Wales at the glittering event held for the Emir of Qatar, his wife and their delegation.
The former England captain looked at the Palace at home and calmly gave a reassuring hand to his fashion designer wife, 50, as she looked nervous walking through the East Gallery surrounded by royals and dignitaries.
It is understood that Beckham was invited to the lavish dinner for his role as ambassador for the Qatar 2022 World Cup.
There was a touching moment when the beaming former footballer walked confidently through the galleries of Buckingham Palace and lent a hand to his wife as she appeared to ask for help.
The controversy seemed to be forgotten on Tuesday night when Beckham, accompanied by his wife Victoria, attended his first state banquet at Buckingham Palace.
Although Beckham took on the role of his wife’s knight in shining armor last night, his invitation to the palace once again raises questions about whether he has paved his way to knighthood.
Beckham has attended several royal events in the past, including her investiture with an OBE in 2017 and the Queen’s Young Leader event in 2018, but this was her first state banquet.
In June, the former Manchester United winger also became an ambassador for the King’s Foundation, a role he said he was “honoured” to take on.
This year, Beckham met with the King about their shared passion for beekeeping and helped Prince William raise funds for the London Air Ambulance.
