Shooting in Darlinghurst, Sydney: Police shoot knife-wielding man, 32, near busy nightlife area
A police officer has shot dead a man allegedly armed with a knife near one of Australia’s busiest nightlife streets.
Police and paramedics swarmed Chisholm Street in Darlinghurst at 4.40pm on Sunday, just a few hundred meters from the pubs, clubs, cafes and restaurants of Sydney’s Oxford Street.
Police were responding to a social security concern and, upon arrival, were reportedly confronted by a 32-year-old man armed with a knife.
“The man allegedly approached police officers and NSW Ambulance paramedics while armed, before an officer discharged his firearm,” NSW Police said.
“The man was treated at the scene before being transported to Saint-Vincent Hospital in a stable condition.
“A crime scene has been established and a number of residential streets closed.”
Police have now deployed a Critical Incident Team from Leichhardt Police Area Command to investigate all circumstances surrounding the incident and determine whether the officer was justified in firing the weapon.
The investigation will be subject to an independent review.
