PlayStation Plus subscribers are in for a treat this November, as among the colorful list of free-to-keep games coming to console are Nioh 2 and Nioh 2 Remastered from 2020.
This fast-paced action RPG from Team Ninja puts its own spin on a notoriously punishing fantasy genre, as popularized by FromSoftware’s dark souls series. Souls games aren’t for everyone, and many players have admitted horrific defeat despite the steep difficulty settings, style-over-story attitude, and grueling boss fights – but for those who like a challenge, it remains one of the best PS5 games and is now available for free on PlayStation Plus.
Nioh 2 isn’t your run-of-the-mill wannabe Soulslike, though.
The game plays as a half-human, half-demon ghost known as a yokai and you have to customize main character Hide. As you traverse the Sengoku era, you’ll be confronted with all the cutting and rambunctiousness loved by all Souls fans, but with much more of a storyline at its core.
The focus on Hide’s character arc differs from the strict focus on aesthetics as seen in Dark Souls, carefully build a storyline into the battle scenes (opens in new tab) by microdosing the player with memories that his character is constantly stuck between two worlds.
These elements are cleverly woven into the gameplay rather than leave you feeling paralyzed, providing a challenging gaming experience that still perfectly complements the best RPGs.
If you watch Nioh 2 next to his fellow man PlayStation Plus November Games (opens in new tab), it definitely stands out from the crowd. The Lego Harry Potter collection is perfect for Potterheads looking to prepare for the highly anticipated 2023 Hogwarts Legacyand indie gem Heavenly Bodies combines ragdoll AI with zero-gravity action – but Nioh 2 certainly deserves its share of the spotlight, especially with the lack of Elden Ring DLC to keep Souls fans entertained.
There are rumors that an Elden DLC is coming soon in light of Announcing Future Press (opens in new tab) that they would postpone part 2 of their coveted Elden Ring strategy guide, The Book of Knowledge.
Could this delay be a hint that new content will be released soon? Who knows, but in the meantime you might as well pick up Nioh 2 with your PlayStation Plus subscription.
