DANNY MURPHY’S CHAMPIONS LEAGUE LAST-EIGHT GUIDE: The Premier League Teams Would Be Happy To Draw

0

Chances are, for the first time since 2009, we will be able to see three English teams through the Champions League semi-finals.

This is the draw the Premier League managers would have wanted for avoiding each other – and last season’s finalists Bayern Munich and Paris Saint-Germain.

Here I give my opinion on the eight teams and say who I think will advance to the semi-finals.

MANCHESTER CITY versus BORUSSIA DORTMUND

Tuesday, 8 p.m., live on BT Sport

Dortmund has the attacking threats from Erling Haaland and Jadon Sancho and you could check out some of their goals and think they are unstoppable.

But they are dodgy at the back and facing City, with Kevin De Bruyne, Raheem Sterling and Ilkay Gundogan against you, is the last thing they need.

It looks nice, but if City doesn’t go through, I think they’ll be devastated. Dortmund only came 5-4 past Sevilla on total level in the last round and City is better than the Spaniards in the attack.

While Haaland is a handful, Ruben Dias, Aymeric Laporte and John Stones are better prepared than anyone.

Verdict: I would be surprised if Dortmund can win two legs.

Watch out for: Jude Bellingham. He has played many games in the first team and is part of Gareth Southgate’s England squad. Not bad for 17! Bellingham likes to be creative, but the big test for him is to remain disciplined when City has long spells with the ball.

REAL MADRID vs LIVERPOOL

Tuesday, 8 p.m., live on BT Sport

Real’s team magazine used to be to scare opponents, but not anymore. Due to injuries, Eden Hazard has not become a different Galactico and their best players, Luka Modric, Karim Benzema and Toni Kroos, are all in their 30s.

In fact, Liverpool has the greatest firepower with Mo Salah, Sadio Mane, Roberto Firmino and Diogo Jota. Modric and Kroos are still able to dictate the pace of games, but Real boss Zinedine Zidane will be concerned about the threat from Salah and Mane, who can attack in an instant.

Verdict: Liverpool have more goals in their squad and I would give them an edge.

Watch out for: Mo Salah. No longer haunted by the dislocated shoulder that ruined his 2018 final against Madrid, the absence of his ‘attacker’, the injured Sergio Ramos, increases the chance that he can retaliate.

BAYERN MUNICH vs. PARIS SAINT-GERMAIN

Wednesday, 8 p.m., live on BT Sport

This is a phenomenal match between last season’s finalists, but the absence of Robert Lewandowski coupled with Neymar’s expected return to PSG puts this draw on the cutting edge.

Bayern’s 1-0 win gives them a psychological advantage as they know how to beat PSG and there’s always a bit of uncertainty for a team that recently beat you.

Of course this game is not a foregone conclusion – how could it be if PSG has Kylian Mbappé – but Bayern has offensive threats with Leroy Sane, Thomas Muller, Serge Gnabry and Kingsley Coman, who scored the winning goal in the final. .

Verdict: For more than 180 minutes, Bayern is in favor of history.

Watch out for: Mauricio Pochettino. I’m not sure he got the credit for what he did at Spurs and the number of players he improved, so it’s great to see him involved in such a huge game.

PORTO vs CHELSEA

Wednesday, 8 p.m., live on BT Sport

Against Juventus in the last round, Pepe won praise for being a defensive warrior, while Sergio Oliveira and Mehdi Taremi have quality going forward.

But Porto was stretched at times and was a little lucky to get through. They will be pragmatic against Chelsea, but against Thomas Tuchel’s side it is normally difficult to score against in Europe (although not on Saturday in the Premier League!) And I think there are plenty of match winners.

Mason Mount is in great shape, N’Golo Kante and Jorginho will control the midfield and the stage is ready for Hakim Ziyech or Christian Pulisic to produce some magic.

Verdict: Porto will try to be smart and hit Chelsea at half time, but the Blues have too many threats.

Watch out for: Mason Mount. Seems to pop up in every major game he plays and impresses. It says a lot that despite all the talent available to Chelsea and England, he is the first name on the team magazine when it matters.
