A mother left a chocolate shop with a smile on her face thanks to the unconditional kindness of a waiter.

The woman created a Reddit post yesterday telling her story of what happened when she and her three-year-old son went to buy hot chocolate.

She and her son had just left a doctor’s appointment, where the doctor referred them to a speech therapist.

‘I had a really bad day with my 3 year old son who has autism. We were going for a walk and he was cold so I said we’d go for a hot chocolate,’ she wrote.

The couple went into ‘a small little shop’ and ordered two small hot chocolates.

The server gave her free hot chocolate after noticing that she was having a hard time dealing with her son's reactions. (Image: A stock photo of a child with their mother)

The two met their server and he tried to communicate with the three-year-old.

“The man said hello to my son who is non-verbal and did not respond,” she wrote.

‘He was again like hello little man! And my son turned his head. I looked at him and said sorry, he’s nonverbal, he doesn’t speak.’

When her son first wanted out of his stroller, things became more difficult for the mother to handle.

‘There (were) no tables inside so I couldn’t take him out. I could feel eyes on me from other customers and saw a woman whispering to her friend and the two of them staring at me,’ she wrote.

Her son quickly changed his behavior after the server gave him a special treat.

The waiter walked up to them behind the counter and handed the little boy ‘a cup of mini marshmallows’.

The little boy quickly calmed down and the server told the original poster (OP) that she looked like she was ‘having a hard time’.

“He handed me a big hot chocolate with cream and marshmallows and when I said I only asked for a small one he said it was on the house,” she wrote.

‘I tried to pay him anyway and he said no, seriously, it’s ok. Enjoy your hot chocolate.’

The server discovered the mother crying outside and even offered her napkins and a table that had been cleared.

“I declined but thanked him for being so nice and he said you never know what a person is going through so always be kind,” she wrote.

The OP revealed in a comment that she didn’t remember the name of the chocolate shop, but that she might come back to it sometime.

Since she posted her heartwarming story, other Reddit users have left positive comments and stories about their experiences with servers or autistic children.
