Mikel Arteta praised Aaron Ramsdale’s response to his nightmarish mistake in Arsenal’s dramatic win against Brentford and admitted “we really wanted to win for him”.

The under-fire goalkeeper has made a rare start in the Premier League with David Raya, Arteta’s number one this season, ineligible to face his parent club at the Emirates.

But he was left blushing after allowing Yoane Wissa to equalize late in the first half, a mistake that put him in the spotlight and canceled out Declan Rice’s opener.

With Arsenal leading their bid to climb to the top of the table, ahead of Liverpool and Manchester City, Ramsdale received a back pass and looked to pull away.

However, Wissa rushed towards him and attacked the clearance, but the stopper was unable to prevent the ball from spinning in the air and falling over the line.

Ramsdale’s blushes were saved when Kai Havertz headed in Ben White’s cross four minutes from time, and their relief was clear in their exuberant celebrations.

“Really happy, especially because he did exactly what he is, a person with a great personality and courage, very determined,” Arteta said. ‘Mistakes are part of football.

“It’s how you react, especially for goalkeepers, which is probably the most difficult position. He did it in an amazing way. I’m not surprised because the whole team and the whole stadium were behind him. He has earned respect and admiration.

“We really wanted to win for him.”

Arsenal responded in style to their surprise setback, with Ramsdale making several saves in the second half before Havertz’s precise header from close range.

Arteta highlighted his team’s fighting qualities after the match.

“I’m really pleased with the performance and the result, obviously, and the way we did it,” he told the BBC.

‘It was against a team that demands a lot of emotional control and we did it in a great way. We showed bravery and were rewarded.

“With 1-0 it could have been a very different game, but with the goal we conceded we had to play for it, but in the end we deserved to win the game.

‘That’s the beautiful thing about this stadium. They support with mistakes. We had certain things we would have to overcome. “We fully believed we would make it.”
